[edit] Remington M1867

I see that you have spend quite some time working on Remington M1867. I just wanted to say thank you for helping improve one of my 'pet' articles ;)

WegianWarrior 09:50, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

PS: If you have time and the interest for old firearms, I've also written Jarmann M1884, Krag-Petersson and most of Krag-Jørgensen.

[edit] Overwikification

My disputes with others who structure the Supercentenarian article differently than I think appropriate go far beyond what you did lately, but what you did lately is something that I regret in every article I see it in...Overwikification.Think carefully before you make a name a link. The men whose names you linked had claims to fame consisting entirely of the information contained about them on the oldest-living-men list...they held that distinction on the dates indicated, and are otherwise absolutely obscure. There is no reason for Wikipedia to include them other than as names on that list.I also saw others link every name on the list I added to the Dean of the College of Cardinals article, ignoring my included-comment that I wasn't sure how many of them merited articles of their own (I would add links only as articles were created) but the men who didn't have prominent ecclesiastical careers, just got very old,are an even more blatant example of making links reflexively rather than thoughtfully.I've had this argument elsewhere and continue to get into some edit wars about it...but neither dead-end links nor useless substubs are a contribution to society IMO!--Louis Epstein/le@put.com/12.144.5.2 18:30, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Er... Dude, don't freak out... A simple It's not recommended would have been suitable. --Bastique 19:16, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Signature

--astiquetalk 15:12, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

I think it needs the Unicode template? as in astique. That way we see your nice curlique instead of a box... --Red King 20:41, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

You mean, like: --astiquetalk 20:53, 14 May 2005 (UTC)?

yup. --Red King 23:38, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ireland town infobox

Just seen your update to Clifden - yes that's better. As soon as the update to {{template:oscoor}} is done for Irish mapping, the grid ref should move into the standard box. However, it is quite hard to see the yellow dot marking the spot. I think the problem is the lack of blue for the sea to give some contrast - for example, see Palermo. How easy is it to change? (and an all-island context is needed, but I see elsewhere that maybe you are working on that?). --Red King 23:38, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

  • or just colour it red rather than yellow, as in Galway. (where is the colour attribute?) --Red King 23:42, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I used the yellow to differentiate between cities (red) and towns--plus it's a smaller graphic (in size). But me see what I can come up with. --astiquetalk 00:38, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Appropriate map for Irish towns and cities

Maybe I've come late into this and the debate has already been held, but why are the Irish infoboxes showing location within county rather than location within Ireland? This seems to be preaching to the converted! Nobody except Irish people know the Irish counties. Compare Galway with Palermo, Marseilles or Cardiff. The tiny map of Ireland isn't sufficient. But let's see Dundalk when you do it and that should make it obvious Red King, sign your name! sorry! --Red King 17:24, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

I did it this way because that's the way the Irish cities had already been done by Zoney. And smaller towns are much more likely than cities to be viewed in the context of the counties rather than the entire country (i.e., my logic was, if the cities like Dublin and Limerick were done that way, then certainly we should expect it of towns).

True as far as it goes. But why did Zoney do the cities that way, against the norm for the rest of Europe? (I'll ask him!) --Red King 17:24, 16 May 2005 (UTC) I can't - he is on the wagon! --Red King 17:26, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Maybe make Ireland bigger in the county graphics, so we can see better where the county is located?

Re: Dundalk, I looked at the map at Map of County Louth, and I'm not sure what the issue is with Dundalk. astiquetalk 15:34, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

it is such a tiny county that it will probably show as one pixel on the map of Ireland :) But let's see. --Red King 17:24, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
  • What about something like this?:
Map of Ireland with County Louth extruded
Map of Ireland with County Louth extruded
    astiquetalk18:25, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that looks a lot better. I noticed something similar with Bristol. You might need to try it with County Cork and County Galway to see how it will fit in the info box. Also, an inland county like County Westmeath --Red King 08:59, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Floating cities! I've just corrected Dublin to move the pin back onto land - it was out at the Kish Lightship! The position of the pin on the map is absolute, so if you (or Djagan? Zoney?) reform the map underneath, the red splat goes in the wrong place! --Red King 16:09, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

I'm thinking I'm beginning to see the problem...what browser are you using? It shouldn't matter, of course, but I'm now showing Dublin in the suburb of Palmerstown, all the way to the west! --astiquetalk 16:20, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
IE 6.0 - like 95% of the internet. btw, Galway has completely lost its splat.
Actually, Internet Explorer as a whole is down to 80% and falling--and likely to continue to fall until IE becomes CSS 2.1 compliant. Working on that Galway splat... The Dublin issue was more because the graphic was of a different size than the rest. I've adjusted it. Now I think I need to adjust the citybox again... --astiquetalk 17:45, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Just out of curiousity, where are your getting your grid refrence numbers from. I dont know if you have a specific site that your getting them from or your kinda just guessing from the UK OS database. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 21:39, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

I accept your reasonable compromise, although I wonder if everybody else will be happy. Please let me know how to recategorise other counties in Ireland for consistency.--File Éireann 21:09, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: methamphetamine article comments

I didn't say you were bigoted, nor did I intend to infer it. I said the generalization that all gay men are promiscuous is bigoted, as is any blanket generalization about any group of people. I didn't mean any personal insult to you. --Bk0 02:04, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] syphillis

Hello, I just wanted to point out that syphillis can, in fact, be transmitted hematogenously. Not common, but it does happen. See, for example this paper. You can chase the references from there if interested. Anyways, just wanted to point out that your statement: "Gay men are experience a rapid rise of HIV and syphalis (which cannot be transmitted introvenously)..." over at Talk:methamphetamine is incorrect. --Osmodiar 04:36, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] speed freaks

I see what you are trying to get at with the statement, but I think it needs to be re-worded. The way it is presented makes it seem to be a blanket statement. I know (or knew, more appropriately} plenty of straight meth users who displayed compulsive sexual behavior. googuse 08:10, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Clare Island map

If you look closely, it was WikiDon, not me who put the map in. I changed it round, he/she complained so I put it back again. Feel free to alter the page. By the way, look at WikiDon's page - lots of cute dogs - a bit like on your page! --File Éireann 01:44, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

  • Added more info, resized map to 280px. Also check: Talk:Clare Island, I put in some lighthouse info we might want to add to "History"?

Thanks for the WOOF!, Woof to your buddy. WikiDon

NORTHERN IRELAND:
No, User:Kiand wants me to make Northern Ireland (and the border) the same color as the Rep. of, make the entire island green. But Wiki is here to educate, it is a "human geography" location, with a human geography name, my maps are NOT physical geography. No. Ireland is also a human geo situation. It also gives the casual viewer a great point of reference. My maps are designed to give the average "Joelene" a quick point of reference as to where a location is, the 11-year looking up information, it is not designed to answer all questions, but maybe to make you look farther. Maps that just have the county don't do the casual person from another country much good. I want people to know where in a country something is, quickly, on-the-fly, with out much fuss.

I also think Kiand wants to ignore the political situation; maybe if we don't put it in there, it will go away? But, his sugjestion IS political in and of itself. I thought it makes a great, quick, point-of-reference that is why it is there. But, it is ironic with him trying to leave it out is what proves it should stay in. The maps aren't just made for people who live in Ireland, who might already know the lay-of-land, but for the rest of the world. And the rest of the world is almost nothing else but politics.

SIDE NOTE: Did you like my lighthouse history? WikiDon 04:46, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

  • I have been replacing them, the Island and Loughs are done (the ones that I had done), about 1/3rd of the bays have also been done. I need to do the other 2/3rds of the bays, and three specialty maps. WikiDon 02:35, 31 May 2005 (UTC)
    • OKAY Check that one. I will do the others, it may take a little bit. (Between you and I [and anyone who reads while its here], I was poking a little jab at the Brit's w/that color.)

[edit] Italian-English Ireland...

This would involve a lot of work, for rather little return. Especially as, to be fair, it has to be two-way. I've done Castlebar and Westport, but not inclined to do more. --Red King 19:22, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] A wee favour

I noticed you seem to be good on codes on things, well, I was wondering if you could help out the Irish wikipedia? There's a few things to be done, first of all the Community portal(Lárionad chomhphobail) needs to be done up to look preety. Also a COTW code would be useful, other usefuls would be Featured article code, featured picture code and all those little wikipedia pictures that are dotted around(like the one in the community portal), an open tasks code would be great too.

I'm kinda loading it on here, I don't mean to pressure you or anything, just if you could or have time, any help would really be great. - Dalta 20:59, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

  • Cóordanáidí - Coordinates
  • Eangach Éireannach - Irish Grid
  • Daonra Thuathúil- Rural Pop.

Thanks for the help, if you need anything else, just ask. P.S. I translated the thing on your Irish page for you. - Dalta 10:35, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
Ar fheabhas ar fad! Excellent altogether, I'm not sure if we need the English name of the town and it'ld be better if links were red rather than linking to the English site, but it's a great addition alright, really makes the site look proffesional. Thanks a lot Bastique. I just translated the C.S.O. thing, so you can link them to here instead: ga:An Phríomhoifig Staidrimh na hÉireann- Dalta 21:29, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
But it's the Gaeilge Wikipedia, not the French, Italian, etc. It'ld be like having Roma in the Italian thing with (Rome) underneath. Italian-speakers don't need to know it's Rome in English, even if they all speak English. - Dalta 22:14, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. - Dalta 22:40, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
