Bandra-Kurla complex
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bandra-Kurla complex is a planned commercial complex in the suburbs of the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay). According to MMRDA, the complex is the first of a series of "growth centres" created to "arrest further concentration" of offices and commercial activities in South Mumbai. It change the travel pattern in mumbai.
This complex has come up on marshy land on either side of Mahim Creek.
BKC, as it is known, is also an example of callous planning with no concern for either the environment or residential areas in its vicinity. The area was created by destroying hundreds of hectares of mangroves near the Mahim nature park despite the protests of environmentalists. It was built at a higher level than the neighbouring residential colonies which began to experiencing monsoon flooding soon after. The noise pollution from the main BKC road is also tremendous since it was built right next to the residential colonies though the plan was to build the road on the other side abutting the remaining mangroves. BKC is a perfect example of how callous and anti-people planning in India is.
