Area code 914
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 914 is a state of New York telephone area code. It is the area code for Westchester County, including the city of Yonkers. It was one of the original area codes established in October, 1947.
Until 2000, the 914 area code also served the counties of Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, and Delaware, in addition to Westchester. However, due to the ever-growing popularity and commercialization of cell phones and internet dial-up connections, the area code was split on June 5, 2000 with Westchester retaining 914, and the remaining counties receiving the new area code of 845.
In addition to the aforementioned counties, 914 also carried the Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk until the 516 area code was given to Long Island in 1951.
Since 2004, a block of numbers used by MCI has also been used in the Green Zone of Baghdad, Iraq to provide United States government officials and humanitarian workers access to "local" calls.[1]
