[edit] Overview
American was built and opened in 1976 and was named so because this was the year of America's bicentennial. Its mascot and colors were chosen to reflect this. The school uses a Hialeah address but mainly serves northern Miami Lakes, including Palm Springs North and The Country Club of Miami.
American's main athletic rival is Barabara Goleman High School. Other rival schools include, Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School, Miami Carol City High School, Hialeah High School and Miramar High School.
In 2006 The Girls Varsity Softball Team, The Boys Bowling Team & the Boys Soccer Team all won District Championships.
American's student population is one of the most diverse in the district. Accomidating both high income and low income families. American's student population is 65% Hispanic, 27% Black,7% White, and 2% of Asian descent. 35% of the students receive free or reduced priced lunch. The district average is 44%.
American is composed of 3 buildings. The main building which houses most of the classrooms. Then there is the 3 and 4 thousand buildings which house the freshman class in order for there to be enough room for the rest of the student body in the main building. Some students find the room numbering system in the main building difficult to figure out.
