Albers' founding was gradual and began with trade and industries centered around the train depot central to the town, which was established by Air Line Railroad in 1891. At that time the stop was known as Albers Station. On January 30, 1901 the first subdivision of land was filed by Edward Case, Registered Land Surveyor. The F.H. Albers subdivision was platted and filed at the Clinton County Courthouse in Carlyle.
Henry Tonnies was the main entrepreneur and catalyst for the foundation of the village starting and operating a general goods store, a coal mine, and other businesses, as well as forming a committee for the establishment and building of a Catholic church.
By 1912, approximately 175 persons were living in the joint settlement of the Town of Tonnies and Albers Station. Business included three general stores, a hardware store, a butcher shop, a creamery, three saloons, a barber shop, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a lumberyard, a sawmill, and an elevator.
Today, the original Henry Tonnies store is Huegen Mercantile. The store has been in continuous operation since Henry opened the doors and therefore one of the longest operating mercantile stores in the state of Illinois.
