[edit] A-League 2006-07 Newsletter I

Introduction
The first ever Wikiproject A-League newsletter is here! The 2006-07 A-League season will bring the usual enjoyment and fanaticism that only football/soccer can create. This new season also means a lot of (currently-open) tasks that require completion throughout the course of the next 21 weeks.
Position Ladder
A Position Ladder will be placed on each team page, which will provide an up-to-date visualization of the current A-League standings. However, problems may occur when Position Ladders aren't updated with the new statistics that don't involve matches of the team whose page the Position Ladder resides on. To remedy this, a base Position Ladder will be created, which will be located at {{2006-07 A-League Position Ladder}} (link). Please update this as soon as possible after the match has ended, as this will keep the Wikipedia community informed.

A few notes regarding the base Position Ladder:-

  • Please do not substitute the Position Ladder template on the team pages, as it won’t get automatically updated if you do.
  • Please only update the Position Ladder at the end of a match, and if there is any large dispute about the result, do not add it, but instead wait for an official report by the A-League confirming the result.
  • When updating, make sure to adjust all of the below fields:-
    • The played field – add one (eg. 13→14 etc.)
    • Either the win, loss or draw field, depending on the result for that team.
    • The points field – either add 3 points (win), 1 point (draw) or leave the same (loss)
    • The for and the against section
    • Make sure you repeat this process for both teams – not just the team you follow!
Summary Tables
Each team page will have a Summary Table added to it, which will provide an at-a-glance look at the results of the team throughout the season. We ask that, at every chance you get, you fill in the results of these Summary Tables – it only takes a few seconds, but it will help keep the uninformed "in the loop" – it is an encyclopedia we’re writing, after all.

As with the Position Ladders, a few notes about the Summary Tables:-

  • Please place the winner in bold text (using '''winning team''').
  • With the crowd figures, please only place a comma if the attendance is over 10,000 people (eg. use 8648 instead of 8,468 and 11,482 instead of 11482).

[edit] Sports logos and templates

Hi. Creating templates for use in sports articles is good, but there are some problems. First, for legal reasons, we really can't use the team logos in templates. I know it would look better, but we absolutely can't.

Second, it really doesn't look good if you create templates before you're ready to use them in articles. I'm asking you right now to stop creating templates, until such time as you've created articles that use them.

I'm giving you one week to create articles to use those templates; any that are still "orphaned" (that is, not used by any article) at the end of this week will be deleted.

I don't mean to be harsh here, but we do have to keep some degree of order. DS 19:11, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

It's important to note that "we absolutely can't" is only a matter of WP policy. It's important to know that WP's stance on fair use images may not accurately reflect the law. This is not to say the policy isn't one worth respecting for various other reasons, and I would encourage you to do so. Read up at Wikipedia_talk:Fair_use/Fair_use_images_in_lists, Wikipedia_talk:Fair_use and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Fair_use if you want to learn more. Woodshed 20:33, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Legend

Thanks for creating pages to do with South Australian football. Also, the A-League pages are good. Nice work with the squad templates. Keep it up.

Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content, as you did to Luke Glavas. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia!--Fuhghettaboutit 05:34, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Serie A scores

Just wondering if you'd be interested in helping us putting up the weekly results every week on wikipedia.

So far I've done up the results box and table outlay.

What we are hoping to do know is put up the weekly results aswell, game by game, similar to what is being done this season on the La Liga and Premiership pages.

Take a look over at Serie_A_2006-07 if interested. By the way, that results table you set up for the Derby Matches looks perfect for what is needed. Can that be adjusted to be able to put in game attendances and the scorers and times of goals aswell ?

Thanks

[edit] Photos

Start uploading! We can use the {{Promophoto}} tag, and simply quote the source as the club website. Just use this as the summary, and select No License from the drop-down menu (the tag will over-ride it):

{{Promophoto}}<br /> Taken from [http://www.adelaideunited.com.au/ Adelaide United FC homepage], promotional portrait photo.

Make sure you rename the images, so that are the names of the players eg: Carl Veart.jpg

Good luck! Daniel.Bryant 06:51, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and we need Image:Jason Spagnuolo.jpg - you seem to have forgotten to save it. I'll follow your contribs and format them - as long as you add the photo, I'm more-than-happy to add the frame (if required). Daniel.Bryant 07:46, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
I see you've uploaded them all to the players with Infoboxes. Any chance you could do it with those who don't? You can use [[Image:{{subst:PAGENAME}}.jpg|thumb|right|{{subst:PAGENAME}}]] for all the player pages who don't have something like "(footballer)" added to the end of them, or else just use [[Image:XYZ.jpg|thumb|right|XYZ]], where "XYZ" is the players' name (without the "(footballer)"). However, the first is easier, because it will do it automatically. Just replace the {{subst:PAGENAME}} with the real player's name if it does have the added (footballer). Copy and paste away, if you can - it will be much appreciated. Daniel.Bryant 08:05, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image location

Sorry to bug you again, but can you make sure you place the image above the first line, with no empty line between them? Thanks, and keep up the great work.

PS: Don't worry fixing those one's you've already done - I'll go thru and do it. Just keep adding photos, and I'll make sure your awesome contributions are rewarded :p. Daniel.Bryant 10:58, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

10% complete
A-League News

Project News
  • The Player project has been moved, overhauled and refined. It now is not limited to the 2005-06 player list. However, only 10% of articles are considered "complete", and hopefully we can get this figure to approach 100% by the end of the season.
  • Major changes to the layout of the 2006-07 A-League season page have taken place recently, and an infobox created. A table for attendances, as well as top scorer etc. are now in place. All users are encouraged to update the scores for completed matches as they come in.
  • Recently, Perth Glory F.C. was moved to Perth Glory FC after no objections were raised at the Wikiproject talk page. All links to the old page (including various templates) were changed.
  • The project requires pictures of games and stadiums to help improve articles. Any pictures are much appreciated.
  • The A-League Portal has been set up. Feel free to update the scores, and make sure you check out the selected article and picture each fortnight.
  • The football (soccer) barnstar has recently became the official award of the Wikiproject. Feel free to hand it out to anyone you see making excellent contributions to all things A-League related.

[edit] Image tagging for Image:Dida.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dida.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

[edit] Serie B template

Why did you move it to Template:Serie B teamlist? There is no sense in it, since they're all templates in the form "Serie A", "Serie C1/A", "Serie C2/B" and so on. --Angelo 02:48, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiproject:Italian Football

Hi ya. I see you add to Italian Football articles from time to time. Just wondering if you want to check out Wikipedia:Italian Football. We are just hoping to organise our efforts towards improving articles better. If you want to sign up just put your name down under participants on the project. You can do as much or as little work as you like and any ideas on improving pages would be great. Niall123 18:50, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Expansion of WP:A-League

Hi Rossoneri3,

Just thought I'd let you know there is currently a proposal to expand WikiProject A-League to include all areas of football/soccer in Australia, including the NSL, A-League, Socceroos, state leagues and more. A more formal proposal page can be found here. Please indicate whether you support the idea or not at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject A-League, and also add your 2c about what the new project should be called. Cheers! – AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 04:12, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Bruce Djite.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bruce Djite.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Fair use images in templates

I am in the process of reverting your recent edits adding fair use logos to football club squad templates, as use of fair use images in templates is forbidden by the fair use policy. Oldelpaso 15:17, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

It shouldn't have been in the Celtic template either, I have now removed it. From the fair use policy: Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. Oldelpaso 12:02, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A-League club designs

Just wondering what you were basing your edits to my A-League designs on. My original images were just to promote the colours, as the team kits don't really have "designs" as such like they do with AFL (which I created the designs for those clubs).

I can see the Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory ones are based on the logo, but for example the Central Coast Mariners seems to be based on nothing that I am aware of. Let me know because if they are deemed to be better, I will try to make some better quality ones for you (the circle in the Perth one is hardly perfect). For example, the Melbourne one can be made a lot better by using the template i have for the Brisbane Bears design. Cheers, Seth Cohen 00:50, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Newcastle United Jets (White Background).gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Newcastle United Jets (White Background).gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Thanks for uploading Image:Adlcomets.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Adlcomets.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Adlcomets.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:06, 31 May 2007 (UTC). [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Ptpiriecity.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ptpiriecity.jpg. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. [edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:LegaCalcio.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:LegaCalcio.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
