[edit] Notice
I spend a fair amount of time reverting vandalism, or what looks like vandalism. If I have reverted a good-faith edit, please consider whether it may have looked like vandalism (especially to someone moving rather quickly). If I have reverted vandalism back into a page, chalk it up to my clumsiness.
Either way, please revert me if I'm wrong. Constructive criticism is always welcome.
[edit] Hello
This user page is far from finished. I have yet much to discuss about myself that is or may be relevant to Wikipedia, but I also hope to prune this page down to its essentials. It will be either much longer or much shorter (preferably the latter) before too long, I hope.
On the Internet, I go by the aliases Críostaí (Irish Gaelic for "Christian") and Anturiaethwr (Welsh for "adventurer"). I am currently a sophomore at Manchester College majoring in religion, philosophy, and peace studies. I intend to go into the ministry, but that is only a stopgap until I can find some career that suits my interests and goals in life.
[edit] Wikipedia and me
What I'm likely to do |
---|
I sometimes beguile away my evenings by sitting on the recent changes from anons in the "article" namespace and looking for vandalism. I also fix typos and other spelling errors, when the mood strikes me; grammar, unless it is so atrocious that I can't figure out what it ought to be; and punctuation, when I run across errors. Vandalism reversion and mechanics correction will probably make up most of my edits. Additionally, I infrequently contribute to discussions relating to [[Avatar: The Last Airbender.]] It's just about the only TV show I watch anymore (on an actual TV, anyway), and I keep hoping that someone, somewhere, will find a reliable source about when the next episode will come out. (TV Guide is sadly misinformed on this subject.) I've also recently begun commenting on AfD discussions. For the moment, my strategy is "Do whatever's obvious; if there's no obvious solution, leave it to more experienced contributors." Apart from that, I make occasional edits to other pages (for instance, as an anon I translated the sample text in Mondial), but generally lack the expertise--or at least sources--to contribute heavily or regularly. |
How I use Wikipedia in research |
---|
Since I began contributing to Wikipedia, I have become more and more aware of its limitations as a resource in research. By the time I first used it, I had already been forbidden to use it as a source in school papers, both because it is not necessarily accurate and because it is an encyclopedia, which is a source of very general information, rather than anything specific enough for scholarly work. That said, it can be an excellent resource for acquainting oneself with a subject briefly, especially on matters of popular culture. For instance, while watching Robot Chicken recently I found myself in need of an introduction to Ron Jeremy. Since I watch Robot Chicken online and use Firefox with a Wikipedia search box, I knew (basically) who he was within seconds. In a similar vein, Wikipedia can remind one of things one has forgotten. Recently, for example, I was researching Elias Chacour, and, although I had read both of his books, could not remember for the life of me whether he was a bishop or an archbishop. I tried Wikipedia, said, "Oh, that's right," and went on my merry way. Furthermore, Wikipedia can be a fantastic tool for finding sources. I use it to find external links to sites that may be more trusted as sources, as well as names of other sources. For instance, were I researching Epictetus, I might look through the article and decide to check out the Enchiridion, seeing it as an important work. I might then go to the external links section, where there are links to his works and to related works both by and about various Stoics. |
Why I created an account |
---|
Looking up which candidates were still running in the U.S. 2008 presidential election, I realized that there needed to be a redirect involving Rudy Giuliani. "No problem," I thought. "That involves creating a new article and redirecting it with some kind of wikimarkup, but 'wp:redirect' ought to tell me how, and away I'll go." No dice. I had to create an account to make the new article. In retrospect, I'm glad I did, largely because of The Transhumanist's tip about some really cool Javascript that allows me to do a few new things, including patrol recent changes far more effectively than I had been. |

Religion |
---|
I am a Christian, but with a liberal bent. I do not believe that the Bible is always literally true, but rather that it is a human record of the divine. My concept of God is somewhat Neo-Platonic, and I prefer a contemplative style of worship, even to the extremes of the Taizé community, Quaker meetings, and Trappist monasticism. Complementing this, I believe in the efficacy of asceticism (within limits) in aiding humanity's experience of the divine. Furthermore, I believe in a mystical experience of the Divine. I have yet to determine how I feel about the primacy of Christianity: I believe either that it is the one true path and that all other religions lead to the Divine because they are, at their roots, Christianity; or that Christianity is merely one of many paths toward the Divine. Regardless, I believe that I, and Christians everywhere, can learn much from the practices and beliefs of other religious traditions, especially Buddhism. Regarding denomination, I am a member of the Church of the Brethren, but I have a strong affinity for Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism, particularly as regards liturgical practices and languages. However, I do not identify with their theologies, nor with their organizational structures. |
Philosophy |
---|
My special interests within philosophy (a field that I consider sadly over-broad) lie in ethics, alethiology (and, consequently, epistemology), and possibility theory. My secondary interests lie in theology (which I consider a specialized branch of philosophy) and in metaphysics, particularly the nature of time. Ethically, I consider myself an individualist in the tradition of Thoreau and a Stoic in the tradition of Epictetus, whose Enchiridion I strongly recommend. Metaphysically, I am a determinist, believing in neither free will nor time (but still choosing to wear a watch, paradoxically). Epistemologically, I agree with the rationalism of Descartes. Alethiologically, I hold that absolute truth exists, but I further maintain that it is presumptuous to make a claim to know it (I associate absolute truth with the Divine in a very Neo-Platonic way). (Incidentally, I hold the same opinions about an absolute code of morality.) |
Peace Studies |
---|
Like many of my friends, I am a pacifist; like fewer of my friends, I am a nonviolentist, and will remain so unless and until I arrive at the conclusion that the position is morally untenable. These positions arise, interestingly enough, from my epistemology: I reserve judgment on others, believing that knowledge of the absolute truth about them and about morality is necessary in order to determine whether or not I have the right to harm them. Lacking this, I refuse (on at least a thoroughly rational level) to do harm willingly or intentionally. Furthermore, I believe that Christianity requires unconditional love of one's enemy (Matt. 5:44) as well as of one's neighbor and of God (Matt. 22:37). In general, my ideas of Christian nonviolence are the same as my ideas of epistemological nonviolence, but with the addition that I believe that only God has the right to judge. In passing, I will mention that I am in accord with much of what Mahatma Gandhi thought about nonviolence, or rather ahimsa. |

Sweet unmerciful crap. I had no idea userboxes could be so fun. If I'd known, I'd've gotten an account long ago. I'm just going to dump a whole bunch in in the order in which I find them.
