Sonic the Hedgehog is a fictional character appearing in the American saturday morning cartoon Sonic the Hedgehog from 1993 to 1995, as well as the ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series published by Archie Comics. In the television show, he is voiced by Jaleel White. In the two-part episode "Blast to the Past", however, his younger self was voiced by Tahj Mowry.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic, humanoid hedgehog who is endowed with super-speed. Like his counterpart from the series of video games, he wears white gloves on his hands and red running shoes.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic is champion of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and a hedgehog endowed with super-speed. In most episodes of the show, Sonic usually acquires a power ring during the third act which charges up his speed ability. He is voiced in the animated series by Jaleel White.

Sonic was born during the reign of King Maximillian Acorn, in Mobotropolis, the capital of the sovereign Kingdom of Acorn. Sonic's parents never appear in the cartoon; it is assumed that he was raised by his uncle Sir Charles (aka Uncle Chuck). As a child, Sonic used to play with Princess Sally. Sir Charles was a top inventor of the Acorn Kingdom and a personal friend of the King. Following the Great War, a warlord named Julian orchestrated a coup d'état and banished the King. Julian then renamed himself Robotnik and ordered that all citizens of Mobotropolis be roboticized and transformed in mindless slaves. Sonic and Sally, along with several other children, were spirited out of the city and hid inside a woodland camp that would eventually become Knothole Village. At the same time, Uncle Chuck fell into Robotnik's hands and was roboticized. Sonic remains frustrated by his inability to free his uncle from Robotropolis.

[edit] Abilities

Most of Sonic's abilities are in keeping with his video game counterpart, including his super-speed. Notably, while this version of Sonic was adventuring in outer space, he was implanted with a device allowing him to understand all languages (including those of 'regular' animals). As with the games, the cause of Sonic's super-speed is not addressed to a specific degree; He is shown to have been imbued with speed since birth in the comic. His speed allows him to perform impressive feats, such as vibrating at high speeds to such a degree that it allows him to pass through solid objects, running across a bridge of dirt that he threw into the air, (0000000000001.mil sec) and scooping up a handful of salt water, forming it into a ball and throwing it. He is able to use chaos control but needs a emerald to do so.

He can also do a powerful slide kick. His speed also increases his combat abilities. His "figure 8" move increases his speed, strength and allows him to briefly hover in midair. Spinning around in an upright position, Sonic can become a makeshift tornado, taking down any foes close to him. Sonic can achieve similar effects by spinning his arms around, propelling him into the air and defeating anyone caught in his path. In addition to his signature Sonic Spin, which can cut through most things, Sonic can also turn his hands and feet into miniature buzzsaws, although he has only demonstrated this ability a couple of times.

Another ability of Sonic's is the absorption of Power Rings, which he uses to get a boost of energy during battle as well as to facilitate his Super Transformations into such incarnations as Super Sonic & Ultra Sonic. Following the destruction of Knothole, it is revealed that Sonic has absorbed so many Power Rings that their energy has given him increased healing abilities.

[edit] Possible Futures

In the comic, there are several possible future storylines. One is Mobius: 25 Years Later, in which Sonic is King while his wife Queen Sally rules by his side. They have two children, Princess Sonia and Prince Manik. Another possible future in the comic is an alternate Mobius: 25 Years Later, in which Sally is married to Shadow the Hedgehog, with Knuckles as his enforcer and former Dark-Legionnaire Lien-Da as his chief advisor. Sonic and Lara-Su overthrow Shadow, and Sonic and Sally get back together. Still a third possible future in the comic similar in nature to Mobius: 25 Years Later, in which Sonic and Sally are married and have two children, who are not mentioned by name. However, they appear to be similar to the 25 Years Later Manik and Sonia, with the boy being a hedgehog and the girl being a ground squirrel and both possessing super speed.
