Snively is a fictional character from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. He appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series (called "SatAM" by most Sonic fans), and the Archie- published Sonic the Hedgehog comic book. In the cartoon, Snively was voiced by Charlie Adler.

[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog (cartoon)

The cowardly nephew of Dr. Robotnik, Snively was reduced to a lackey shortly before his uncle's takeover of the "Kingdom of Acorn" on the planet of Mobius, and spent the next ten years serving him. At the time of the takeover, Snively had a full head of hair, but in the altered past created by the "Blast to the Past" episodes, Sonic rushed past him causing him to lose them, leaving only a few strands, and thus Snively has personal reasons for loathing the hedgehog. Physically abused by Robotnik, Snively began planning against him and, following his uncle's defeat, attempted to seize power himself.

In the planned third season of SatAM, Snively was to have tried to rule Robotroplis, but fail. He would then try to free Ixis Naugus to get him to help, and in the process, free Robotnik and King Acorn by mistake. Reduced once again, not simply to a lackey but to an insignificant nothing, Snively would rebel against Naugus and Robotnik and join Sonic and the Freedom Fighters[citation needed].

[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics)

In spite of the show's cancellation, Snively would remain a regular character in Archie Comic's Sonic comic book, which set up its own continuity. In the comic, Snively debuted in issue 8 (after a cameo as "Jacob Snarley" in issue 6's Christmas special). The comic version of Snively, who is the son of Robotnik's brother, Colin, is no less the same as his animated counterpart, differing only in color scheme. Throughout the early half of the comic's run, Snively's outfit was usually blue and brown rather than two shades of green as the animated series showed, although he did switch to his original color scheme on seldom occasions.

Throughout the run of the "Archie" continuity, Snively has secretly resented bearing the brunt of Robotnik's abuse. On a few occasions, Snively has taken over Robotropolis and played at being dictator while his uncle was away. Snively's rule never lasts very long, as he was not a terribly shrewd villain; He reprograms his uncle's SWATbots to make him snacks and fetch him things, rather than focusing on more important tasks like hunting down the Freedom Fighters (which Snively has insisted he could do more efficiently than Robotnik). However, Snively has on occasion to be shown as or more dangerous than Robotnik. When an experiment with a device called a Transdimensional Transporter caused Robotnik to become trapped in a void, Snively then attempted to use the device to wipe out vast sections of Mobius at once, a plan even Robotnik found crazy. He also built the Egg bots (EggRobos in the video games), which proved to be more powerful than the standard SWATBots. While his uncle was invading Flicky Island during the Sonic 3D Blast issue, Snively bugged Robotnik's radio transmission then leaked it to the Freedom Fighters, knowing Robotnik would be alone on the island with no SWATbots to protect him. During the "Death Egg Saga", Snively even went so far as to change the signs in Robotropolis to read "Snivopolis", but his fun came to an end when Robotnik parachuted through a skylight and landed on top of him.

Over time, Snively's treachery gradually elevated until he orchestrated the original Robotnik's death during the "EndGame" storyline; Snively changed the DNA-based coding in the "Ultimate Annihilator" weapon to recognize only Robotnik. When Robotnik turned his weapon on Knothole, the Annihilator overloaded and de-atomized him, the result being that Snively successfully killed him. Afterward, Snively hid in the ruins of Robotropolis and was played at being a supervillain again, until a run-in with Sonic and Princess Sally landed him in jail. He eventually escaped amongst several other Sonic villains; Although he was bullied as the 'runt' of the group, Snively was suddenly put in charge of the gang when he led the others to believe that he managed to bypass the electronic lock on their prison cell (despite Snively actually having no idea what caused the jailbreak).

As it turned out, a version of Robotnik from another dimension had seen video footage of Snively tampering with the former Robotnik's Annihilator weapon, and broke Snively out of prison so he could be under his heel again. Although Snively helped the Freedom Fighters escape from the newly-dubbed "Dr. Eggman" and blow up his satellite, Snively later resumed working as the Doctor's assistant when he was lured back with the promise of revenge on his father, Colin (Robotnik's brother). In a faustian bargain, Snively then allowed himself to be roboticized. Later however, Snively and Eggman were both permanently restored to flesh by aliens known as the Bem.

After the Xorda conflict of issues #124-5, Snively disappeared into obscurity, but later returned to help the Freedom Fighters in issue #152. He worked, for a time, as a member of the "Brain Trust" subdivision of the Freedom Fighters (similar to the planned alliance switch in the aborted third season of SatAM), but, more recently, has rejoined Eggman (issue #162). Upon betraying the Mobians, Snively has adopted a style of dress identical to Eggman's, although with a green coat, instead of red. He was last seen commanding a fleet of airships similar to the Egg Fleet seen in Sonic Heroes. Notably, aside from the new outfit, Snively is the only character in the comic directly from SatAM whose appearance remains the same (although such was not always the case, as shown in issue #97; where Snively was drawn rather off-model). Recently, in issue #171, after having told Shadow where Professor Gerald's diary could be found, Shadow ripped the last six of his hairs out of his head, claiming it was for wasting his time. Snively was able to track Shadow to the Freedom Fighter's HQ to get his hairs back (Tails hypothesizes that he has trackers in each of his hairs). He arrives with a giant mechanical lobster known as the "Egg Lobster". As Knuckles battles it, Shadow comes and defeats it with ease and gives Snively his hairs back and lets him go.

Snively then return to Knothole when his uncle unleashes the full force of the Egg Fleet in an all-out assault, Snively piloting a green mech which he uses to destroy the Freedom Fighters' base of operations and abduct everyone there, with the exception of Sonic (he however forgot to take Tails, Knuckles, and Amy as they were hidden under some rubble). When the four freedom fighters staged a rescue, it was Snively who first noticed and tried to warn Eggman that the teleporter to the Egg Grapes had been reprogrammed; that the Mobian captives were instead being teleported to New Mobotropolis. Snively then attempted to blast through the shields surrounding the city, only to be fired upon by his step-sister, Hope, whom he had previously encouraged to leave Knothole before Eggman attacked. She expressed her shame and disappointment in him and their entire family, and Snively seemed to be genuinely moved to tears. The outcome of the attack, in other words, if she survived the encounter, was not shown.

[edit] Sonic the Comic footnote

Snively was briefly intended to serve as Robotnik's sidekick in Sonic the Comic (the British Sonic comic). But when writer Nigel Kitching discovered he was not required to include Snively, he instead replaced him with a similar character named Grimer, who debuted in #21 of that series. (The original script to #21 as written by Kitching features Snively in place of Grimer.)
