Sogndal is a municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Sogndalsfjøra, which is the center of Sogndal municipality, has 3075 inhabitants (2006).

The Norwegian dialect spoken in Sogndal is called sognamål.
[edit] The name Sogndal
The Norse form of the name was Sóknardalr. The first element is the genitive case of the rivername Sókn (now Sogndalselvi) and the last element is dalr which means 'valley, dale'. (For the meaning of the (same) rivername see under Sokndal.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1984. It shows the stem of a viking ship, to commemorate the battle of Fimreite in 1184.

Sogndal was established as a municipality on January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The annex of Fjærland was transferred from Balestrand to Sogndal on January 1, 2000.
Kaupanger stave church (built 12th century) is located in the small village of Kaupanger.
In 1917, a Sogndal farmer ploughed up the Eggjum stone, a gravestone with runic inscriptions important for the history of the Norse language.

The local football team, Sogndal IL, plays in the Adeccoligaen, the second tier of Norwegian football.
