[edit] About the Municipality

[edit] The name Leikanger

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Leikanger (Norse Leikvangir), since the first church was built there. The first element is leikr which means 'sports, athletics' and the last element is the plural form of vangr which means 'meadow'.

Until 1889 the name was written Lekanger.

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1963). It shows a twig of an apple tree.

[edit] History

Leikanger was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Balestrand was separated from Leikanger in 1850. The parts of Leikanger lying south of the Sognefjord were transferred to the municipalities of Lærdal and Vik on 1 January 1992.
