[edit] Youth
MacKenzie, a native of Scotland, began playing as a youth in that country. He played for both the U-16 and U-18 Scottish national teams in the Scottish Youth League. He also spent time with the St. Johnstone and Dundee United youth teams. At some point, he moved to the United States where he attended Clover Hill High School in Virginia his junior and senior years. As a senior prep soccer player, MacKenzie was selected as All State. He then attended Old Dominion University where he played on the men’s soccer team from 2003 to 2006. He finished his four seasons as team captain, having played eighty-one games and scored fourteen goals.
[edit] Professional
During the 2006 collegiate off season, MacKenzie played as an amateur with the Williamsburg Legacy of the Premier Development League.[1] In 2007, MacKenzie began the pre-season with the Virginia Beach Mariners of the USL First Division. However, the team folded before the start of the season and MacKenzie signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL Second Division.[2] On April 16, 2008, the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division announced they had signed MacKenzie for the upcoming season.
