Mountain Jam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Mountain Jam" is a long, improvised jam song by the Allman Brothers Band. "Mountain Jam" was originally recorded at the Fillmore East shows that produced At Fillmore East, but was left off that album because it was too long, the song was released later in Eat a Peach album and "At Fillmore East deluxe edition". The song is based on a folk song by Donovan called "There Is A Mountain" (Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun" is also quoted musically in the piece, 22 minutes in) and first appeared on his In Concert album and then later on Donovan's Greatest Hits. At 33 minutes and 41 seconds long the song is without lyrics and features solos from all of the band members. Duane Allman takes the first guitar solo, after which Gregg Allman solos on Hammond organ, followed by a solo by Dickey Betts. Midway through the song there is a drum duet by Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, later joined by a bass guitar solo by Berry Oakley. Mountain Jam can be found on the Fillmore East album and the Eat a Peach Album, as well as a different version on Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival: July 3 & 5, 1970, where there are two recordings of it (the second of which features guest musicians Johnny Winter on guitar, and Thom Doucette on harmonica).
A 44 minute version of the Mountain Jam also appears in "The Allman Brothers Band Live at Ludlow Garage: 1970" Recorded at Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati, OH.
