Miss Universe 1983, the 32nd Miss Universe pageant, was held at Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis, Missouri, USA on July 11, 1983. Lorraine Downes of New Zealand was crowned Miss Universe 1983, the first woman from that country to win the title. Eighty contestants competed in the pageant.

- Gambia (MW 1983) and Switzerland (MW 1982), who both competed in Miss World, won the award for Miss Photogenic and Miss Amity.
- Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, France,Gambia, Holland, Iceland, and Norway competed in Miss World 1983 in London four months later. Iceland was placed as finalist, while Austria, Belgium, and Holland as semi-finalists. Norway, Karen Dobloug (semi-finalist in Miss Universe 1983), failed to place in the semi-finalists.
- Cyprus, Gibraltar, Indonesia, Ireland, Lebanon, Spain, Switzerland, and Turks & Caicos competed in Miss World 1982 in London. Switzerland (3rd runner-up) and Ireland (2nd runner-up) were placed as finalists, while Spain (semi-finalist in Miss Universe 1983), failed to place in the semi-finalists.
- One out of the 80 contestants in the Miss Universe 1983 is deceased. Brazil, Mariza Fully Coelho, who did not make the semi-finals, was killed in a car accident fifteen years later.
- Christina Thompson (Miss Bahamas) daughter Sacha Scott, represents the country in Miss Universe 2008.
