The military of Yemen Army (includes Republican Guard), Navy (includes Marines), Yemen Air Force (Al Quwwat al Jawwiya al Jamahiriya al Yemeniya; includes Air Defense Force) (2008). About 12% of the country's GDP accounts for defense spending. A major reorganization of the armed forces continues. The unified air forces and air defenses are now under one command. The navy has concentrated in Aden. Total armed forces manning numbers about 1,502,000 with conscripts accounting for 542,500. The army reserves contain approximately 675,000 members. The Yemen Arab Republic and The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen joined to form the Republic of Yemen on 22 May 1990.

The supreme commander of the armed forces is Field Marshal, Ali Abdullah Saleh, the President of the Republic of Yemen.
The Yemeni army numbers 60,000 troops and is organised into 10 armored brigades, 23 infantry brigades, 5 mechanised brigades, 2 airborne brigades, 1 special forces brigade, 5 militia brigades, 7 artillery brigades, 3 SSM brigades.

Yemen's civilian forces include 20,000 members of the Central Security Organization. Additionally, tribal levies are estimated at 20,000 members.
