The school was founded in 1961 by Monsignor Robert T. Bulman, and is located on a small portion of the parish's 32-acre campus. The school attracts students from over 30 parochial, private, and public schools in Monmouth County and Middlesex County. The school maintains an average enrollment of just under 400 students in grades nine through twelve, although various plans have been instituted in recent years in an attempt to increase the school's enrollment. One such tactic was the school's virtual learning program[1], instituted in 2004. Virtual foreign language, math, and history classes began in 2005.

[edit] Virtual Learning Program

In keeping with the allure technology provides, increased tuition paved way for leased laptops, which all incoming freshman receive, for strictly school related purposes, during the school year. Virtual learning classes include Math, Foreign Languages (Latin, Spanish, and French) as well as History. Several of these laptops were stolen during a school break-in in 2006 (see "Vandalisms" category below)

In January 1999, vandals struck the school, more vandalism would occur in 1999, the field house and a garage at the school were vandalized by means of graffiti.[2]

In August of 2006 the school made headlines in the Asbury Park Press[citation needed]and other local publications after vandalism during which several classrooms were ransacked, several freshman virtual learning laptops, and video production equipment were stolen. The Middletown Independent reported [3] that police were "investigating a burglary at Mater Dei High School in the New Monmouth section of town that occurred in the overnight hours of Aug. 23 and 24. Several offices and classrooms were vandalized and at least three laptop computers, as well as television and video equipment were taken." The school was repaired in time for the September opening, although much of the lost equipment was not replaced. No suspects have been identified, nor was any action taken by the school to counteract the incident.
