Man Group has a history reaching back over 200 years, starting with a Broking business founded in 1783 by barrel maker James Man. It was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1994 and in September 2000 the company changed its name from E D & F Man Group plc to Man Group plc.
The company currently employs over 1,600 people in 13 countries. It has key centers in London, Pfäffikon (Switzerland), Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney.
In 2007, Man Group floated MF Global, its brokerage division, via an IPO in New York, allowing it to focus on its asset management division Man Investments.

The group is also known for sponsoring the Man Booker Prize, the Man Booker International Prize and the Man Asian Literary Prize.
In June 2007 the University of Oxford and Man Group announced the creation of the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance. Man’s initial commitment to the centre was for £13.75m, one of the largest single donations to a British higher education institution in the preceding decade.
Man is celebrating its 225th Anniversary in 2008.
