The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway E2 Class was a class of 0-6-0T steam locomotives designed by Lawson Billinton. 10 were built between 1913 and 1916, with the last five having unusual extended side tanks.
They were said to be loosely-based on the E1 Class and were mainly used for shunting, as their small coal bunkers made them unsuitable for long trips. They were used at Victoria Station for shunting carriages. However, they are perhaps best known[citation needed] as shunters at Southampton Docks, in which capacity they were used until their replacement by British Rail Class 08 diesel shunters in the 1960s.[citation needed]
None has survived to preservation.
Thomas the Tank Engine from The Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry is based on the E2.
[edit] 00 gauge models
Hornby produced the locomotive in its earliest form as an 00 gauge model. Production lasted from 1979 to 1985, and the model was later used as the basis for the Thomas the Tank Engine model.
Bachmann have also produced an E2 model in their Junior Range.
