John Michael Alt (born May 30, 1962 Stuttgart, Germany) is a former professional American football offensive tackle in the National Football League. He played his entire NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1984 to 1996.
An under-rated strength and robust heart propelled John Alt through 13 seasons as he became the Chiefs' cornerstone on their offensive line. A number-one draft pick out of Iowa in 1984, alt didn't take a permanent spot in the Chiefs starting lineup until 1987. A slow start and injuries hampered him his first three seasons; he also found it difficult at times coming into the game in a reserve role.
"It takes time to get warmed up, and I have to really be into the game before I can start playing my best," he said. When he finally became a starter, the Chiefs always saw his best.
The Chiefs' running game improved in 1987, and by the time Marty Schottenheimer became head coach in 1989, Alt was ready to contribute in a big way to his new head coach's smashmouth style of football.
"I just go in and do my thing," Alt said of his playing style. "I adjust my set depending on my opponent's tactics. If he's speedy, I try to get off the ball a little quicker." Alt helped move Kansas City's running game to the top of the league, and his pass protection was also superb. The Chiefs made the playoffs five of his last six seasons with the team.
He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1992 and 1993, selected to the All-AFC first team from 1990 to 1993, and was first All-NFL in 1990 and 1991. Alt played in a total of 179 games with the Chiefs.
Unable to stay away from the game for too long, Alt began assistant coaching at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota teaching the position he knows best, offensive line.
