Talk:Jal (band)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] THIS IS A PAKISTANI BAND AND !!!
Why don't you get it through your HEAD!!!
Hey! That doesnt' matter when Jal sells and performs more in than Pakistan. It never mattered if BA was a Canadian and not . - An unbiased Crash.
[edit] What Happened to the songs??
Hey there where a list of songs what happened to them???Tere naam There should be a discussion about the Atif/Goher compostion controversy.
[edit] Jal's name in Hindi alphabet instead of Urdu?
I understand JAL might be an originally Sanskrit word, but it is quite common in Urdu as well. And so it should not be specifically mentioned as Hindi word, but should be called an Urdu word. But irrespective of what one thinks about it being Hindi/Urdu word, 'Jal' should only be written in Urdu alphabets, since it is a Paksitani group, and no one in Pakistan understands written Hindi. Just because Indians included some of their songs in their movies, doesn't give them the right to impose Hindi on them. - Salman.
- I think it makes sense to call "Jal" an Urdu word but not to ONLY give it's spelling in Urdu. Urdu should be given preference and priority as the band sings (and reads) in Urdu. However, it makes sense to give the Sanskrit word in Devanagari script. No one is talking about imposing any language on anyone. Having the word "Jal" in Perso-Arabic script is not imposition; having it in Roman script is not imposition; having it in Devanagari is not imposition.
- Right now the article says "Jal" is Urdu with Persian origin, but I think this is wrong. The Persian word for water is "ab"; "jal" is from Sanskrit. You can check Wiktionary, or a good Sanskrit-English dictionary, or look at some Sanskritized Hindi expressions like "jal-vayu" for "weather". I'm going to let this comment sit here for a few days, but if no one acts, I'll change this to read "Jal is an Urdu word of Sanskrit origin..." Interlingua talk email 02:47, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

- Salaam. The name should appear in both the Urdu and Hindi scripts because Jal is popular in both India and Pakistan. Jal has had concerts in India and their songs have appeared in Hindi films such as Kalyug. The same applies for the scripts of Bollywood movies and actors in Wikipedia. Thanks for your understanding, AnupamTalk 05:25, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, I've studied Hindi for some 12 years, Sanskrit for 9 years and Urdu for 7 years. But 'JAL' was not seen in Urdu even a 100th time than in Hindi. If its not a case like "sameer/samir" which in Hindi means wind (Sanskrit origin) and in Arabic means a companion, I do not think it is as frequent in Urdu as it is in Hindi and even Sanskrit. Though its quite acceptable to write the word in Arabic script the band being from a country where written Hindi is not understood by people.
fuck off indians ...... urdu the best language (aboud)

[edit] Need proof of notability
Just quickly glanced at this article. There isn't any major outside references made to establish notability. It would be best if you could reference newspaper articles and so forth as well as their recent chart positions, etc. --Ben Houston 01:13, 3 June 2006 (UTC) Jal is a hindi word. It doesn't matter if its common in urdu or not but its a hindi word.
[edit] Seems biased
I have not heard much about Jal. It's a rather new group; however, this article is positively biased towards the Band. Its tone should be changed to make it neutral. At some points it seems like a newspaper article.

Agreed. I like the band a lot too, but this article reads more like a press release than an actual encyclopedia article. I hope to work on this later today. Threepointone 04:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Extremely biased.. agree completely- this article reads more like slick PR than anything.. i think the etymology portion is a little too melodramatic-
'Jal -is inspired by the beauty of a woman by name haritHa and is a Sanskrit word which means 'water.'[1] An element that constitutes of 70% of human being, and more than 2 / 3 of the surface of the earth. The inspiration behind the band's name affirms the intimate connection of water to the rhythms of our lives-and how it is something to be celebrated, revered, and preserved for all times to come. The name 'Jal' is the product of the band's vision to..'
that stuff about intimate connections and 70% of the human body really has no place in an encyclopedia article.. a simple sentence to the effect of 'jal= water' would suffice.
i also think the 'achievements' section needs to be toned down a bit for the same reasons
- Lol ... 'seems' biased? Dudes, most of this stuff is copied right from the band's official website.
[edit] Author speaks in first person
Please note the boldfaced parts
"Keeping their songs melodious and catchy at the same time the band BELIEVES that music is truly the world's universal language capable of bringing OUR hearts and souls together. A well composed song, personified with honest and heart felt lyrics, which may fall under the genre emo or emotional, and spirited rhythms, will eventually be heard by music enthusiasts all around the world . Owing to its universal appeal Jal's lyrics are a subtle manifestation of emotions expressed in an energetic and harmonious manner. Fueled by the desire to freshen up the pop genre in Pakistan these qualities give Jal's music a very high degree of accessibility both in terms of composition and lyrics in Pakistan. But the controversy surrounding some songs remain questions yet to be answered."
The story is definitely the author's personal feelings. There is no reference given. What the band believes should be quoted. The only sentence that is not personal is the last one in the above. And I think the story would have been better if this part was elaborated, like what legal proceedings are going on.
In the following excerpt it would be preferable if some attributes were made: "Their debut album was a huge hit and reports are on their website that soon they will be releasing a new album - Payal. But a teaser of one of their songs from the new album has been released and is available on their website for free download" Tkrack 19:01, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
