[edit] Choirs
The school annually hosts a competition of high school show choirs, which sing and dance in costume. In March 2007, a total of 17 show choirs participated. The all-day events begin early in the morning and last into the evening, with competitions in three divisions — open, prep and single gender. The six top-scoring groups compete in the evening finals. Solo and duet competitions are also held.[3] The events are covered in area newspapers.[4]
[edit] Athletics
The school's sports teams have won five Wisconsin state titles: Summer Baseball, 1990; Girls’ Basketball 1995; Softball 1999; and Gymnastics in both 2005 and 2006.[5] The gymnastics team came in third at the state championships, falling short in their attempt to win a third consecutive Division 2 title.[6]
In 2006, student-athlete Joanna Schultz won state championships in the 200- and 400-yard races after winning both events the previous three years. Schultz became the first athlete in Wisconsin history to win two events in four consecutive years.[7] Schultz is now running at Notre Dame.
Powerlifter Sarah Lang finished third at the 2007 state championships, setting school records with a deadlift of 330 pounds, squat of 300 pounds and a total-combined lift of 760 pounds. Lang's finish marked Holmen's seventh consecutive year with at least one top-three finisher at the championships.[8]
[edit] Academics
HHS is proud of the following:
- Graduation rate is 98.6% (2006)
- 76.5% of students taking AP exams passed (2006)
- HHS offers seven (7) Advanced Placement classes
- ACT: There has been a 10% increase since 1997 in the number of students taking the test.
- Over $500,000 in scholarships has been awarded to the Class of 2006
- Holmen High is an NCA/Renaissance School
The Renaissance Program is an academic recognition/reward program. Students have an opportunity to be recognized for their academic efforts by receiving:
- Academic letters, plaques, certificates.
- Coupons from local businesses.
- Parking privileges.
- Special academic pep assembly.
- Many other incentives.
The school has over twenty (20) local businesses that support the Renaissance Program. Maroon (high honor roll) and white (honor roll) recognizes students for their academic commitment and achievements in the Renaissance Program.
Many nationally acclaimed students have and do attend HHS. Of current significance is Ravi Shah, a senior, a National Merit Scholarship finalist. He is currently at the top of his class and made an appearance with the HHS Band in the movie Midian. Another of Shah's myriad of academic honors includes his recognition as an AP National Scholar. Cody Haro also attends Holmen. Haro won the National History Day(NHD) in Washington, D.C. in his division for a project on the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. He is the first Wisconsin student to have won at the national level of NHD.
