[edit] January 2008

Hi, the recent edit you made to Falklands War has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thanks. Sam Korn (smoddy) 20:02, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

I note that I've also reverted the same edits. I would suggest that if you have a desire to include this material that you discuss it with other editors on the Talk Page first. Please don't repeatedly add removed material, you may be unfamiliar with Wikipedia but this is called edit warring. Can I suggest you read WP:3RR, this type of behaviour can be considered unconstructive and can lead to a block from editing.
Having looked at the material I would suggest it is at too low a level of detail to be included in the main article. I have thought about starting an article with a Falklands War timeline and it would be appropriate to include in there. Would you be interested in collaborating on such an article? Justin talk 21:51, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] HMS Cardiff

Hi again. I notice you've made an effort to improve the article on HMS Cardiff. Unfortunately the number of photographs you've used has meant that the formatting has gone awry. There is also now some duplication in the article in that the shootdown of the Canberra is mentioned twice. Could I suggest that you might like to move some of the pictures to improve layout and perhaps reduce their number. You appear to have only been on Wikipedia for a short time so can I suggest that you try articles in the sandbox or your user space first. If you need any help you only have to ask. Justin talk 01:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:SeaDart Cardiff misfire.JPG

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:SeaDart Cardiff misfire.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 13:35, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Is this how talk works?

LOL mate it's fine, although I was starting to get a bit worried, as I have the utmost respect for Falklands vets and didn't want to offend you. Unfortunately you have mullered the Cardiff article a bit, but you're edits are full of great info so we can probably keep em all. There is the legal matter of what info you've added being "Public Domain", but I'm not sure how that works so one of the guys will have to take a look. The stuff on the main article might have to go, ya see we can't make pages too long on Wikipedia, so we have to move ther information to separate pages i.e. Cardiff. I think with you're insight we can probably boost the Cardiff article up to a B class in no time. Ryan4314 (talk) 11:03, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Ken, if you look above you'll see two posts from me trying to offer some help and guidance, thats how talk is supposed to work. Both Ryan and I considered the edits you'd made to be valuable contributions, especially your own personal experiences. Neither of us had the intention of removing the contributions you'd made, merely to tidy up the formatting. Regarding the images, if you took them with your camera, you own the copyright and can post as many as your like.
So like Ryan says, its fine and as far as I'm concerned there is no need for apologies. To be honest glad to have you aboard, our main concern was to avoid offending you. The offer stands regarding the timeline article - I think your contribution would be valuable. Justin talk 11:36, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Woah slow down there Ken, no need to remove it all. It's just the format and the legal issues of "public domain" that need sorting, otherwise we can make Cardiff a really nice looking article. I don't know if you've looked at my user page, but I've recently been working on articles to "up" their grade, I think I'd like to do Cardiff next. So how about this; we (the falklands guys on here) will work on the format and come to you with any questions, yea? Ryan4314 (talk) 12:37, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok Ken I've had a more thorough re-read of the article, I think (if Justin agrees with me) that we should temporarily revert all your edits to Cardiff, because there is the matter of them conflicting with a Wikipedia policy called BLP, it basically means removed any unsourced material about living people (Wiki takes it very seriously coz they got in big trouble once). Then (using all your info as a guide) we can start work on re-writing it. What do you think? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryan4314 (talkcontribs) 12:51, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
No I haven't heard of it, but it will do as a source, do u have a copy? Perhaps later you could scan the article. Also Ken when you add to a conversation make sure you add the correct number of ":" before your entry, also it's considered bad form to edit your previous talk entries (barring spelling corrections), Oh and don't forget to sign your posts (like I always do lol) and use the "Show preview" button (it's just to the right of the "Save page" button), it'll cut down your number of edits. Ryan4314 (talk) 16:09, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Hold off on that magazine article for a bit mate, I'm just sorting out a sandbox for the Cardiff article now, so you can see what changes we're gonna make. I'm also gonna ask a you some questions soon. Firstly, you know the black& white picture in the infobox, do u know what Cardiff was doing at the time? What year it was? Anything liek that. Ryan4314 (talk) 16:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok, that's great, in case you're interested here's the guideline we're following. Ryan4314 (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

(Undent) I've got a new job for you Ken. Have you heard of Wikimedia Commons? Basically it's part of Wikipedia, it's where users can upload there own photos so every1 else can use them. I need you to register with the site (just like u did with Wikipedia) and then upload all the photos you added to Cardiff article (in fact add more if you like, there's no limit!). Once you've done that you should create a category for them, something like "HMS Cardiff (D108)". Don't worry it'll talk you through it all, just make sure you read it all properly. Feel free to ask me any questions before you proceed on anything you're unsure of, cheers. Ryan4314 (talk) 19:24, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

No worries, there's no rush and you don't have to put em all up, perhaps just a few at first and then maybe you can add to it over time if you're bored one evening. Basically it's meant to be a similar process as uploading pics to WikiPEDIA, unfortunately I can't upload them to WikiCOMMONS coz I think you (as the person releasing them) need to do that. Ryan4314 (talk) 10:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
You can email me picture scans if you like but it would be better if you could do it yourself. If i do it I have to log an email with the wiki foundation that I have the originators permssion. My email address is in my profile but if you find that difficult its XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Justin talk 10:54, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi Ken, I was looking for information about Cardiff before the war (all FA rank ship articles have a section similar to this) and happened to find this [1] strapping young sailor! On that note, I don't suppose you know about any good online resources that talk about what Cardiff did before the war? Ryan4314 (talk) 11:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Here's a link to your pic Ken, although in future you'll need to give each photo a unique descriptive name, this one for example might be called "HMS Cardiff Operations Room 3AM". This is so it can found for categorization purposes, don't worry though I can categorize this pic from here. All we need is just one pic for now, once I get it all working I'll give u the nod to add more yea? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryan4314 (talkcontribs) 16:39, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Right, basically all u need to do is add this line "[[Category:HMS Cardiff (D108)]]" (without speech marks) to the bottom of any pics you upload, just make sure they all have unique, descriptive titles. Always feel free to me a question in case ur not sure. Ryan4314 (talk) 16:52, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Well done Ken, u did it right (hope that didn't sound condescending), great pic (although I'll have to move it, as it's not strictly a pic about Cardiff). I'm about a 1/3 of the way done with the rewrite just so u know, so there's still no rush for you to upload your Cardiff pics to commons. Ryan4314 (talk) 01:17, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Also make sure that when u add the "[[Category:HMS Cardiff (D108)]]" make sure you add it to the very bottom of the page on it's own, like this. Ryan4314 (talk) 01:30, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

(undent) Well I'm certainly glad you're "giving them away", I've been doing a lot research and I'm very interested in Cardiff now. Ryan4314 (talk) 16:30, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Can I ask, do u know why some Sea Darts were red and others white? Ryan4314 (talk) 16:32, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
OIC, how interesting. LOL you'd of thought it'd be the other way around with red colour signifying war and white signifying peace ;) Ryan4314 (talk) 17:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
I second that Ken, I've just been looking at your photos on commons, a real treat! (the Vulcan one is amazing), I don't want you to see my sandbox version of the Cardiff article yet, not until I've finished. Are you familiar with wikipedia's grading system? Well I've "upped" a few articles recently and what often stops me from reaching the high FA grades is just plain lack of source material, however Cardiff certainly seems to have a long and varied history, so I think we can do it!
I wonder if you might be able to help with another little project I started, originally the South Atlantic Medal was a "stub grade" (the lowest grade) but I was able to up it to a B grade recently! [2] I don't suppose you happen to have a pic of the medal with the rosette on the ribbon? Ryan4314 (talk) 18:15, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Have you seen the article now? What do you think? I'm quite proud of it, felt I did my little bit to honour the veterans (just wish I could find out who designed it). Ryan4314 (talk) 18:31, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok Ken I've been looking into it, I think I can actually upload all your photos to Commons on your behalf (I have to do a bit of jiggery pokery, by sending them an e-mail explaining your giving permission), if you e-mail me the lot, I'll select the most relevant to the Cardiff article(ironically they don't like to many on there it seems) and categorize them n that stuff, sound good to you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryan4314 (talkcontribs) 02:16, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Nope still no rush (to be honest, on Wikipedia their motto is "no rush") just e-mail them over a few at a time if u want. On 2nd thoughts I think I'm only 1/3 done just because I've found so much extra content to add. Also it'd be great if u could tell me the story of what relation Cardiff has to Port Howard. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryan4314 (talkcontribs) 09:52, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Ok, here's the link to my sandbox! I'm very keen to hear your feedback thus far. Everything below the "List of Type 42" table is stuff that needs to be moved up to the top of the article, so it's all a bit messy at the moment. Wonder if u can see my clever idea with Lt Clayton ;) Ryan4314 (talk) 11:47, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:HMS Cardiff.jpeg

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:HMS Cardiff.jpeg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:56, 17 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kjetil r (talk) 17:56, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button Image:Signature_icon.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. [edit] Do you still check wiki Ken?

Hi Ken, I know we E-mail but I was just curious if you still follow wiki?

In case you're interested HMS Cardiff is now a "Selected Ship" on the Royal Navy Portal, a small step on the route to getting her Featured Article status.

Also one of your pics (this one ) has caused a bit of a debate here, we can't figure out what gun it is! Can you put us out of our misery please. Ryan4314 (talk) 00:04, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Still visiting when I get the time. The pic you are debating is of the Starboard GDP.....Gun Direction Platform. A powerful set of binnoculars. You can also fire the 4.5 gun from here if you really need to.Griffiths911 (talk) 05:46, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
