Flounder Tramping is a traditional method of catching flounder or other flat fish by wading in shallow water and detecting and catching them by standing on them. This method of fishing is known to have been used in the coastal waters and rivers estuaries of South West Scotland for centuries. Once trapped the fish were often secured by impaling them on a trident or three pronged long handled fork, before being bagged.
[edit] Flounder Tramping Championships
Today, the World Flounder Tramping Championships are held each July or August in the estuary of the Urr Water to the south Palnackie. The competition is held to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Around 300-400 competitors take part each year, competing for the £150 first prize.
