[edit] Adoption

So I heard you were seeking adoption and decided to stop by. If you'd like, I could adopt you. :) Your choice. My talk page is open, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 23:00, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Basically, I take you under my "wing" and help you out whenever you need it while you're going through the learning curve on Wikipedia. It isn't a binding contract, so you needn't worry, and all that happens is you have somebody to help you out. So if you'd like I could adopt you. :) I've got to get to school, however, so I'll be back in a few hours. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 13:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good! Would you like this to be active or passive? Active means that I find out what you'd like to do, then provide you with the relevant information and techniques; passive means that you kinda teach yourself, dropping by for information if you feel you need it. I'm fine with whichever one. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 00:38, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Not to make it sound like this is an MMORPG, but which role would you like to play?
  • Article engineer
  • New page and vandalism patroller
  • XfD veteran
  • WikiGnome
Of course, you can mix and match classes, and I'm just using this metaphor because it fits, but there are general areas of the encyclopedia which some people prefer over others. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 01:34, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, got a bit busy in real life over here. Anyway, basically;
Now, that's just a sample of stuff you could do. You could also produce free-use pictures for articles, for example. And while there are some people who stick to one area and nothing else (for example, vandalism fighting only) the majority of users do a variety of things here. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 22:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
For AfD help, you should familiarize yourself with the policies used in deletion arguments. There are many, too many to list, but the core policies are notability policies. Also, things like WP:GOOGLE, WP:ATA, WP:BLP1E, and so on are fundamental concepts. For new pages, you'd just go to Special:Newpages and check articles that appear; if you think they should be deleted, add a speedy tag and an admin will review that.
For vandalism fighting, the best way is to get a program; I'd suggest WP:HUGGLE. See WP:VAN for more definitions of what vandalism is. You should also know WP:WARN.
There's tons of stuff, and I'm not going to lead you through it; the fun comes in discovering new parts of the encyclopedia to improve. That should get you started, however. Cheers! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 00:15, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
An official adoption, I guess. If you need to know anything at all, feel free to drop by my talk page. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 01:04, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Great job! Speedy deletion is quite helpful indeed. The related area, new page patrolling, is also helpful. Also, for a policy boosting "course", you may want to try WP:XFD processes, particularly WP:AFD. Just check a few and comment if you want to; AFDs are great for learning. Best thing about Wikipedia is; you can do this all at your own pace, so don't feel pressured. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 02:50, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chastity cage

I fixed the nomination. I'd suggest going through all the steps listed at WP:AFD, or getting a tool for the process (such as Twinkle), as that makes it much easier. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 21:49, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Adoption

Well, there's no real way to formalize it; to make a binding contract, for example, would be against Wikipedia's goals. I removed the userbox, however, and added one to my userpage. Oh, and my apologies for my absence; school is hell, and I'm trying to take a Wikibreak until I've settled this workload. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 00:48, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Less cluttered now. :) Anyway, anything I can help you with? I've got a bit of free time tonight. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 01:04, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
  1. Wikipedia:Userboxes should be able to help you out. There's a whole list of available topics in the gallery section.
  2. As for joining WikiProjects; by all means, go ahead and join. Wikipedia encourages equality; therefore, groups may not exclude other editors unless they fear that not doing so will harm the encyclopedia, in which case they'll make their concerns known. Given that you won't do any harm, I'd say go ahead and join up. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 12:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
You could always go to deletion review, as that's usually what one does when the AfD was closed recently and you feel it was closed improperly. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 01:00, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Usually, WP:AIV is the right place to go; WP:ANI is for more complicated incidents, WP:AN3 for revert wars, WP:RFPP for page vandalism, and WP:UAA for inappropriate usernames. Those are basically the core report pages; there are more, but they aren't used nearly as frequently.
Anyway, the pages I just mentioned will always be staffed by multiple admins and experienced users who will help assist you with vandals or whatnot; just make sure you report things correctly (i.e. know how to report someone at AIV.) Hope that helps, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 03:07, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request & WP:Saints

To add yourself to Wikiproject Saints, add your name to the list on this page. I would poke around all of the project pages, starting with WP:SAINTS and WT:SAINTS, there is plenty to do.

Drop me a line if there is anything else I can do for you. Pastordavid (talk) 18:05, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Try just stepping away from the computer. If not possible, go to WP:BACKLOG and start helping to slog through the massive backlogs wherever you might be able to help. Perhaps some penance/community service would help to put it all in perspective? Pastordavid (talk) 20:48, 24 April 2008 (UTC)`

[edit] Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln

A very nice addition to the article. Pastordavid (talk) 20:31, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

A very nice stub. 3 things to note. (1) Check the external links policy. I deleted on blog link from the Moses article. (2) There is a difference between event notices/press releases (which a number of the links in the Christ church article were), and third-party coverage. And (3) WP:REF explains how to add references, rather than straight links. I think you are on the right track here, and are adding some good content to the encyclopedia. Pastordavid (talk) 21:12, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Finally, I'm back.

I'm horribly sorry about the length of time between my responses! I hate life. Let me rephrase that; I hate schoolwork. And exams. Ugh.

And great job on the work! I'm impressed. :) Not to be the pessimist or anything, though, but try not to do more than you can keep up; sometimes, users will do a lot of stuff on Wikipedia and then simply burn out and get bored of here for a while. I'm not saying stop editing, but moderation is always good, and it isn't like you have to keep the status quo. But great job editing!

And as for rollback, sure, I'd be happy to grant it to you! Only condition is not to use it to edit war, but I trust that you're not going to do that, so I'll grant you rollback permission. You may want to see User:Gracenotes/rollback.js and User:Mr.Z-man/rollbackSummary.js; they let you use custom edit summaries for rolling back, if need be (pick one of those; not sure what the difference is, but they both get the job done. Just don't use them at the same time or they'll conflict and fail to work). Anyway, cheers! Keep up the good work! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 04:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, the scripts don't grant you the ability; that's already there. However, the default summary can be vague sometimes, so some people like to add custom summaries. You don't have to if you don't want to, of course.
Woops. Sorry about that, I thought I had... or maybe I did for another user... hmm. I'm really sorry in either case. But TravisTX fixed that all up, so now you definitely have the powers. And don't worry, the reason you didn't get it isn't anything bad; I just forgot. :) Sorry again! Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 02:15, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Non-admin closure

The code for closing an AfD discussion is at WP:NAC. Took me a while to find it too. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters(Broken clamshellsOtter chirps) 17:41, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Actually, WP:NAC is just an essay. The policy is at WP:DPR#NAC and is very brief. The policy itself is ambiguous but is firmly established is not one word is likely to change anytime soon (see the talk page and archives for long history of debate about this). I suggest the following rules 1) never close a discussion unless you are very familiar with the deletion debates in that particular arena, i.e. don't suddenly drop by WP:TFD and decide to close a discussion after you participate in a couple debates; 2) Don't ever close a debate that should close as "delete" (even though you may see it done unless it should have been speedied to begin with and there is no argument from anyone you would get reverted without discussion - besides it's a waste of time, if it's that clear point it out to an uninvolved admin); 3) Don't generally close debates that are even in topic you edit in, it's too easy to have a bias that you don't even notice; 4) No enough about the venue that you know the players (certain editors are sure to complain if they don't like the result - which will generally result in an automatic reversion of the close); 5) Never ever close a discussion early; 6) Only close when you are very very very sure of the proper result based on policy/consensus; and 7) always remember that it is not a vote - but if you intend to close against the !vote count it may be considered controversial so at least ask an admin. I closed many discussions before I became an admin, including one quite controversial one, I never had a complaint. I have seen others reverted on sight. I hung out at MFD a lot and found discussions that hadn't been properly closed by admins, fixed them, and learned the ropes that way - tagging talk pages of kept pages and such. If you need any help with deletions feel free to ask. I am often involved in discussions at WP:DELPRO and have worked on the structure and scope of WP:MFD and WP:TFD a bit. Of course, TenPoundHammer and MoP are great resources too! (and may be a better gauge of consensus!) I only close occasionally at AFD, so I'm less help there. You might ask MoP to let you help with some closes - give your read on consensus, do all the mechanics of the close, but let MoP do the actual close.--Doug.(talk contribs) 20:12, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
I see that this developed further below and that you have done some of what I suggested but with Keeper76, I didn't see that until after I wrote this. Still, my comments all stand. Keep in mind that I am not a fan of WP:NAC and it is not policy.--Doug.(talk contribs) 20:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rollback

Per your request at WP:RFR and MoP’s message I have granted rollback privileges. Remember to use rollback only to revert vandalism, nothing else. I offer Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback as a place where you can see try it out without causing any harm. Cheers! —Travistalk 02:15, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to WP:UU!

Hi Ecoleetage, I see you've joined the UU work group. Good to have you in WP:UU! :) Aleta Sing 03:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:UU

Well, you probably have seen that Unitarian Universalism is the first official collaboration, for obvious reasons. It's a rather limited amount we've gotten done on it though, so anything you can do to improve it is good. Do you have any ideas for things that need doing? BTW, I made a redirect from UUSC. You should probably list your newly re-created article under new articles. :) Aleta Sing 23:03, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Good job....and thanks!

[edit] welcoming

Anyone can. I believe all New Page reviewers should. It's not just to promote a collegial environment. It also gives new users one more chance to read the policies and guidelines. I figure if I'm gonna delete a page because it does not meet inclusion criteria, I should give the creator one more chance to understand how to contribute constructively. Cheers, and happy editing. Dlohcierekim 21:27, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

There are welcoming templates at Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/Welcome templates. I copy and paste the template I want onto the user talk page. Dlohcierekim 21:31, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm finally back! Also, I haven't read much of Gibran's work, but I probably should, as I like that quote. And I'll answer my email shortly. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 01:11, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Very nice! That's what I was referencing in the email; I'm quite impressed. Now, the next challenge; going featured. :) Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 21:12, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
There are a few Wikiprojects about that, I think; maybe WP:FA has a list, I'm not sure though. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 21:53, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Small steps to reach the final goal, my friend. You tried, which is awesome in itself. If you'd like, I can help address whatever concerns they raised in your next project (only if you want me to, of course). Also, I'll respond to your emails in a bit, schoolwork is still bothersome. Sorry! I really dislike being held back by school, but I do want to get into university so I guess this is a sacrifice. :P Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 04:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Opera articles

Hi (and Welcome from the Opera Project). As you'll have seen if you have them on your watchlist, I've added some categories to your four articles. Check the documentation on the Project Page for which categories are essential. You may have noticed that I created new categories for "Operas by xxxx", even though, in Drattell's case, there's currently only one with an article. It's quite easy to do.

The other things I did were 1) to alter your link to Lilith from Drattell's article - it went to the mythological character, which I guess was an oversight, since you put a correct link to the opera on the Lilith disambiguation page; also 2) I added a Stub tag to Lilith (opera) as it doesn't have many of the elements needed for a full article - again, see the Project page. The other articles would benefit from the insertion of sub-headings, again as recommended by the Project. It's a moot point whether they count as stubs, too - probably yes, except for the Joplin.

The final thing is that the articles should be added to The opera corpus so that Project members are up to date. I did that for Lilith and maybe the Joplin one, but not for Still.

Nevertheless, good work and feel free to ask questions - that's how we all learn. --GuillaumeTell 21:49, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the barnstar! Don't let yourself think that your contributions aren't appreciated too. ;) Have a nice day! Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 00:45, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Congratulations

Congratulations on Mrs. P's promotion to GA status! This is excellent news - I know you put a lot of hard work into the article. I'm sorry I wasn't able to offer more help. Once the FA I'm working on is done, I'd still like to see if I can't track down a few more sources for the article, as I am intrigued by the topic. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Thank you, also, for the barnstar: it's such a lovely surprise to get one. :) Kafka Liz (talk) 11:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Eco - If we can find the sources, we can certainly try. I don't think it'll be easy, though, realistically speaking. Not necessarily impossible, but not easy. Kafka Liz (talk) 15:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Feedback on Big Doe Camp

I have posted the article temporarily in My Sandbox. If you want please take a look and give me any feedback you may have, or feel free to edit the article a little. ELt me know if you think it is a stage where I can post it to the Main Wikipedia Space. Magnetawan (talk) 15:22, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Ok that would be great if you could edit it a little. I reference two main articles from the Toronto Star in 1975, and 1955. If you need these articles I can e-mail them to you if you are setup to allow e-mails and feel you need them. I removed the camp song, Your probably right on that point. it is always something that I can add at a later date when I know the article will not be promptly deleted. Once you have gone through it let me know if you think it is at a point where I should try and post it again to the Main Wikipedia. Magnetawan (talk) 15:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Our Friendly Admin has undeleted the article and I have moved all the edits over to the original. So please edit the article on the mainspace at Big Doe Camp. --Magnetawan (talk) 15:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks so much for all of your help with the article. Your right the article does hold a certain value to me. I also appreciate your edits. I will go through them all soon, at the moment however I have a few other real life things to attend to. This next week and a half is extremely crazy for me. Wikipedia has seemed to take over my life recently. I am happy to have gotten the article to a position where it will not deleted. Your help is very much appreciated, I was kind of stuck and didn't know what to do for a while until you pointed me in the right direction. I was getting ready to give up but you gave me a new sense of hope. Also thanks again for the edits and not actually posting them all right away. I will go though them and will most likely implement many of them, it just might take me about a week. Magnetawan (talk) 19:37, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Well I'm not really back on yet but rather avoiding my other work. I've taken a look at your edits and I like some of them and not others. I don't want to remove all the information about the different schools though as I'm trying to link the article to as many different things as possible so that if it ever went to AFD I could say it has impact on more stuff. Give me a couple more days. I have an exam tomorrow and another on wednesday. Magnetawan (talk) 20:30, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Thank you, and also...

Yeah any IP whose first edit is vandalising a userpage should be blocked immediately. The recent changes is where all the anti-vandal fighting happens. It may get repetitive after a while, but if you really want to help, I'd recommend tools like twinkle. Cheers, Spellcast (talk) 15:57, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

I was going to suggest huggle, but apparently it's not recommended for users who are new to the recent changes. Instead, you can try popups (or any of the tools listed here). I'm really use to twinkle, so I'm not sure how good the others are. Remember, if anti-vandal work isn't your thing, you can always work on articles (which is what I prefer). Cheers, Spellcast (talk) 16:10, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Also, about your AIV report on 88.229.188.185 (talk · contribs), IPs are usually given a set of level 1 to 4 warnings (see WP:TUSER) before being blocked. If someone keeps vandalising after a "final warning" (which usually looks like this), they should be reported to AIV. If they stop after a level one or two warning, there's no need to report them. Hope that helps! Spellcast (talk) 16:20, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WNYP

Hey, don't worry about it at all, you did everything proper and the AfD was well done, there's nothing that you did wrong. Pretty much all that I did was remember there was a current Channel 26 in Jamestown (WNYB) and that the license was related to WNYP somehow, so it was just a game of connect the dots and merging the small bit of information into the article. That's why the AfD process is there, it's a cushion to save articles that need more information or discussion before that rash step is taken.

When in doubt television station-wise, doublecheck with WP:TVS and we can fact check further to make sure the information is factual and whether it can be placed in another article or the existing one can be expanded. But in this case, it was easy to think this station didn't exist and that it could be taken to AfD. Trust me, I've learned from my own AfD's, and you eventually learn what should be taken there and what shouldn't. You're doing a good job and I hope that you continue to contribute and do more work on the project. Thank you :). Nate (chatter) 20:07, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] IP vandal

Hi Eco - the reason I didn't block the user was because blocks are meant to be preventative - not punitive. Since he hasn't edited in over a week, there is no clear and present danger to the encyclopedia. Thus, it's advisable not to submit an AIV report on a user who has been inactive for longer than 10-15 minutes. Hope that helps. See also Wikipedia:Blocking policy. xenocidic (talk) 19:44, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Have you considered enabling Twinkle? It allows you to easily report users to AIV by clicking the "ARV" button while viewing their talk page. It also helps to hand out warnings and such. It can be turned on in your Gadgets. xenocidic (talk) 20:08, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I believe twinkle works on Firefox only, but I would suggest upgrading to Firefox anyway. It's free, and much more robust than IE. ( http://www.mozilla.com ). Huggle will also do automatic reporting, yes. xenocidic (talk) 20:13, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: thank you

You may want to look at WP:CSD for the precise way to apply each speedy deletion criterion. Please note that some articles, while they clearly do not belong in Wikipedia, are not eligible for speedy deletion. In such cases, the proposed deletion process is used, and, if even one person contests the process (that is, even the article creator), then the article is nominated for the Articles for Deletion process which involves a three-step setup. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 14:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
