Naples was the most bombed Italian city in World War II. The largest raid was on August 4, 1943 by 400 planes of the US Mediterranean Bomber Command. There were about 180 raids on the city in 1943. The Church of Santa Chiara was destroyed but later rebuilt. The San Loreto hospital was discovered by the Germans in 1942. About 10,000 homes were burnt and 20,000 people were killed.
[edit] Harbour
Many ships at the harbour were sunk, yet it became functional in just one week after the city's liberation.
