Stuttgart faced 53 air raids during World War II. A well-known raid was on 6 September 1943. 338 American heavy bombers attacked the city but losses were heavy and results disappointing.

The center of Stuttgart was totally flattened by the raid on April 22, 1945. The city was an important industrial centre, but many targets were non-military. The attacks leveled 60% of all buildings. Many historic buildings collapsed.
