Ubiquitin links specific protein to be degraded. E1 protein (PDB entry 1r4n) activates ubiquitin (shown in orange, with ATP in red) and attaches it to one of its own cysteine amino acids (green). E1 passes ubiquitin to several specific E2 proteins (1fxt). E2 associates with specific E3 proteins (1ldk, 1fqv) that bind together the activated ubiquitin and the protein to be degraded (the exact site is starred). (more details...)
