[edit] REUR TPI login change notice

Thanks for the heads up, Wantok.  And, if you don't mind my asking, what's the 'cross-project login feature'? K. Kellogg-Smith 00:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

  • A Wikimedia feature under development - enabling a single login across all Wikimedia projects. See single login specifications. You might want to register your user name on other Wikimedia projects you're interested in, just in case, to avoid conflicts later on. Wantok 04:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, will certainly look into it. I've got fifteen Wiki icons for different wikis up on my desktop, always finding myself checking to see if I've logged myself in before doing anything on/with the Wiki.

On another subject: application of the word wontok.  My guess from contexts that I've read is that the word can be used not only to refer to native-born Melanesians, but also to any class of non-native born folks as well.  For example, a Melanesian could call someone (not necessarily a close friend) who is a foreign expatriate currently living and/or working in Melanesia, or who has previously lived and/or worked in Melanesia, a "wontok", no?  I've been wondering if wontok is similar in a sense to the Hawaiian word kama'aina, or "native-born or long term resident".  Is wontok used in the senses of (1) referring to a personal friend, or calling a personal friend wontok in face-to-face conversations, (2) a reference to one or more Melanesians in general, and/or (3) referring to any foreigner who is "a friend of the country", such as NGO aid workers, scientists, scholars, etc.?  K. Kellogg-Smith 17:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Well, firstly, it's wantok - literally "a person who speaks my language". Wontok is a transliteration of how most expatriates (incorrectly) pronounce it. And "person who speaks my language" is the core meaning of the word - the implication being that the person is from the speaker's local area: the same village or a nearby village. It has more recently acquired a more general sense of "from the same place", even meaning "someone who has lived in PNG", at times, or even "friend" (a bit like the English "mate"), but that's usually in a genial or joking sense - really its correct use is in the original sense - one who speaks the same (local, indigenous) language. Wantok 02:09, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
I guess the word Wantok comes from tribal divisions. Sometimes a group of expatriates can consider themselves another tribal divide, and refer to each other this way, I guess.. Aliasd 23:28, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion tags

Thankyou so much for removing all those tags today! I hadn't browsed much recently and spotted them, otherwise I would have done it. It must be so disheartening for a new user that creates a valid stub to have their work marked for deletion so flippantly :( I mean, did that guy really believe that all articles would start as good articles? Aliasd 07:08, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

  • No worries. Plenty more cleanup to be done around here :) Wantok 07:24, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Translation Request

Greetings Wantok,

Can you kindly help me one more time by translating these passages into Tok pisin? Please.

"Salvation is given by the grace of God through faith. Believers must rely on the Holy Spirit to pursue holiness, to honour God, and to love humanity".
"The Lord's Second Coming will take place on the Last Day when He descends from heaven to judge the world: the righteous will receive eternal life, while the wicked will be eternally condemned".
"Jesus Christ, the Word who became flesh, died on the cross for the redemption of sinners, resurrected on the third day and ascended to heaven. He is the only Saviour of mankind, the Creator of the heavens and earth, and the only true God".
"The Holy Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, is inspired by God, the only scriptural truth, and the standard for Christian living".

Any help at all would be Appreciated very much. (A quick rough translation would be fine to me.)

Regards, --Jose77 08:35, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

I have updated the discussion Here. --Jose77 09:53, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re your welcome and RfA process notes at my talk page

Thanks for the welcome but I probably won't spend too much time here. I've never encountered the language outside this wiki and don't anticipate encountering it IRL in the future. Might do some blatant spam/vandal fighting if I see it though. I originally created an acct just to comment on the discussion re K. Kellogg-Smith's actions but it ended up becoming a moot point before I finished writing the comment. (might have been a browser crash in there too :-/) Cheers --Jeremyb 13:32, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Heya

Could you delete "Cover_page_(prototype_A.1)" on tpi wiktionary? Aliasd 01:18, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Agreed, that page was a personal experiment and is not pertinent to current mainspace of the Tok Pisin Wiktionary; I've deleted it from the tpiwikt mainspace, as the user now has a copy in his userspace here on the Tok Pisin Wikipedia. Not to say it would never be pertinent to tpiwikt, but it's certainly not appropriate for mainspace given the current state of the project. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 06:45, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you translate this table onto Tok Pisin (it's for all the villages and cities).

{{Localidat España Places in Spain

}

Thanks for your help. --Jeneme 14:17, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Sure - here you go:

{{Localidat España Peles bilong Spen
|nombre = nem
|de = bilong
|nombre_ofizial = ofisel nem
|bandera = plak
|escudo = mak
|imachen = piksa
|comunidat = (no direct translation - i suggest use "comunidat")
|probinzia = provins
|redolada = (no direct translation - i suggest use "redolada")
|monezipio = taun
|cp = kod bilong pas
|superfizie = hekte
|altaria = antap (arguably)
|poblazión = manmeri
|calendata = yia (I assume this is for year-established)
|chentilizio = (demonym is not used in Tok Pisin)
|ríos = ol wara
|web = web
|situazión = hap
}

We might look at converting this into a general infobox for towns anywhere in the world later. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 00:35, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
