La station est ouverte en 1934.
Elle rend hommage au journaliste Marcel Sembat (1862-1922) qui fut député socialiste du XVIIIe arrondissement (Grandes-Carrières) de Paris de 1893 à sa mort, responsable de La Petite République de 1892 à 1897 et ministre des Travaux publics de 1914 à 1916.
