Does anyone know if you can download Wikipedia (very cool online, free encyclopedia - check out the article on Telkom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telkom) ) so that I can use it for offline use and possibly write it to a cd.

I think it is such a brilliant idea - the article on Jacob Zuma already has information about him being charged by the NPA - come Encarta, lets see you do that :D

Last time I checked (which was ages ago) you could download a full dump of the mysql database. The source for the application is also available so if you put the two together you should be able to have an offline version working. The db will probably be about a gig.

Afaik Wikipedia Foundation was looking into making the content offline on DVD for 3rd world countries where the internet is either unavailable or too expensive.

Have you tried - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Download

esp - http://download.wikimedia.org/
and the software - http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net/

Would be nice if they had one file with them all together instead of piece by piece!

Thanks Bwana - but the prob is that those links don't give satifactory results, mmm - I think i will experiment with the (smaller) afrikaans version of the databace and work this out

But thanks all - will let you know what I manage to do :)

How big is it? I've got some spare bandwidth this month so I'm thinking of pulling down all the tar files. Just for the wikipedia mind.

I am still trying to work out which file contains all of the articles but one of the tables is 22GB but it is labled old - thats why I have installed my own one on the localhost to try and work it out - this is looking more complex than I thought (especially with the wiki code) - dowloads.wikipedia.org

IIRC they split it into two - one DB containing only the latest versions of articles, and another DB that contains latest version + histories. My guess is that 22GB one is the one with histories, the one containing latest versions only was around 1GB last I checked.

Wikipedia is quite remarkable, especially considering it's - what - less than five years old.

Yip and the great thing is that it is open-source ;). Something that another that-shall-not-be-named doesn't like.
