Estigma (sociología)

En Sociología, estigma, es una condición, atributo, rasgo o comportamiento que hace que su portador sea incluido en una categoría social hacia cuyos miembros que genera una respuesta negativa y se les ve como culturalmente inaceptables o inferiores. El concepto fue acuñado en 1963 por el sociólogo estadounidense, Erving Goffman, en su reconocido libro del mismo título, donde precisa la noción sociológica del término como membresía a un grupo social menospreciado (raza, religión, nación, etc.), distinguiéndola de las nociones anatómica (abominación del cuerpo) y psicológica (defectos del carácter del individuo).
