Ziana Zain was born in Kampung Simpang Merpati, Malacca, to Zain Abdullah and Robiah Abdul, in 1968. She is the oldest daughter of five, among them Anuar Zain, who is also an artiste.

Ziana released her debut album Madah Berhelah in 1990. The title song received significant airplay and critical response, launching her singing career. Her second self-titled album, released in 1993, featured her first try at a foreign language song with the track "Chitose Bashi". The single Anggapanmu was well-received and featured in the television drama Murai.
Ziana's third album, Setiaku Di Sini was released in 1995 and involved six composers. Response to the album was enthusiastic, and Ziana won the "Best Female Vocalist In An Album" at 1996 Anugerah Industri Muzik.
Her 4th album, which achieved 'Best Pop Album' in Anugerah Industri Muzik 1998. But she stood up back after winning 'Best Ballad Song' in Juara Lagu 1998 (Puncak Kasih - Adnan Abu Hassan. This song, Puncak Kasih, has been the most popular single ever released by Ziana.
The song 'Syurga Di Hati Kita' was composed by LY. That song was a present for Ziana Zain as token of her marriage with Air Steward, Muhd Armin. The third single, 'Kesuma Hati' was one of the semifinalist for Best Ballad of the Year. However, due to her first pregnancy cause, she had to drop out of the competition.
Her comeback album comes almost after 2 years, right after her post-pregnancy period. This album was nominated in most Malaysian award events. But her greatest achievement in this album is for winning 'Best Ballad Song' in Juara Lagu 2002, song titled 'Menadah Gerimis' which was composed by Singaporean Composer, Azmeer.
Besides which, she recorded her first 'No 1s Live' Compilation Album under EMI. Her live album was adapted from various concerts such as 'Ziana Zain Unplugged Brunei' and 'Ziana Zain in The Park'. It also includes two new songs which she sang during labour of her second child that is 'Lembah Asmara' and 'Bukan'( which was composed by herself). Both songs managed to grab 'Best Pop Song' Choice Award at Anugerah Era 2003/2004.

In addition to her recording career, Ziana has an established career in the Malaysian movie industry beginning with her debut as a supporting character in the 1994 film Sembilu. Her performance led her to winning the Most Popular Film Supporting Actress in the Anugerah Bintang Popular Awards in 1994, beating her co-star Erra Fazira. The film's soundtrack also featured a number of Ziana's songs including "Ku Cinta Padamu", "Anggapanmu" and "Mimpimu Bukan Mimpiku". In the 1996 Sembilu follow-up, Sembilu 2, Ziana reprised her role to critical claim.
Other box-office films that Ziana has performed in include Maria Mariana (1997), Merah (1999), Maria Mariana 2 (1998), Sembilu 2005 (2005), Pontianak Menjerit (2005) and Qabil Khusry Qabil Iqam (2007).
