Zhang Ren (? - 213 AD) was a general serving under the warlord Liu Zhang during the Three Kingdoms era of China.[1]
In the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, Zhang Ren was an officer under the warlord Liu Zhang. During Liu Bei's conquest of Shu, where he invaded Liu Zhang's territory, Zhang Ren was responsible for setting up the ambush in the Valley of the Fallen Phoenix to kill Liu Bei. Zhang Ren accidentally killed Liu Bei's prominent advisor Pang Tong in the ambush, when he mistaked him for Liu Bei. After the battle, Zhang Ren was captured and offered a position in Liu Bei's army. He refused, saying "A loyal officer cannot serve two masters. I decline". He was then executed by Liu Bei. Later, Liu Bei buried him respectfully due to his loyalty to his master.
