Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's (遊☆戯☆王5D's (ファイブディーズ) Yū☆gi☆ō Faibu Dīzu?) is a new Yu-Gi-Oh! series which began to air in Japan from April 2, 2008, and replaces Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (broadcast as Yu-Gi-Oh! GX in the US). This is also the first Yu-Gi-Oh! series to be broadcast in Widescreen.

During the series, the main Duel Disk is a motorcycle called a "D-Wheel" and duelists engage in stadium games called "Riding Duels".[1] The 18 year old main character, Yūsei Fudō, has "Stardust Dragon" as his main card, which is the cover card for the Duelist Genesis trading card set.

As with the previous two series (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX), this series has been acquired by 4Kids Entertainment for broadcasting in the United States in September 2008.[2] It will air on The CW4Kids and will replace Tom and Jerry Tales in both of its 8:00 and 8:30 time slots on Saturday Mornings.[citation needed]

  • Yūsei Fudō (不動遊星 Fudō Yūsei?, 18 years old): The main character, he plays a Speed/Junk deck focusing on Synchro monsters. He lives in the other half of Neo-Domino City, the Satellite. He is respected and admired by his friends for his genius style dueling, and his cool and clever personality. Yūsei and his friends accuse Jack Atlus of stealing the first D-Wheel Yusei built by himself, and his signature card, the Stardust Dragon. Two years after Atlus' departure from Satellite, Yusei built another D-Wheel in order to pursue him and win back Stardust. When Yusei finally manages to face Jack again, their duel is interrupted at the last moment by a red dragon that suddenly appears. It bestows both Yusei and Jack with dragon birthmarks on their forearms. Quickly after, Yusei is taken into custody for breaking into Neo-Domino and it is later shown, outside of Yusei's attention, that he would have won the duel had it not ended prematurely. He is given a marker on his face and put under surveillance in a detention center for more information on his birthmark. The dragon-shaped mark, as revealed by Rex Godwin to Jack, is the mark of a Signer, one of the chosen ones of the People of the Stars.
  • Jack Atlus (ジャック・アトラス Jakku Atorasu?): Jack is Yusei's rival and former best friend. Known as the "Absolute King of the Riding Duel", he was the only inhabitant of Satellite allowed to move to Neo-Domino City, and thus must hide his past from the rest of society. He is very arrogant and overconfident, but still has a strong conscience. His signature card is also a Syncro monster, the Red Daemon's Dragon. When Yusei reached Neo-Domino City to battle Jack, their duel was interrupted at the very end, but it is revealed that Yusei would have beaten Jack, much to the King's shock. Both Jack and Yusei received dragon-like birthmarks from the red dragon that suddenly appears at the end of the duel, and Rex Godwin explains to Jack that he is one of the chosen ones of the People of the Stars. He plays a Swarm Deck, based on getting his monsters out to summon Red Daemon's Dragon.
  • Aki Izayoi (十六夜 アキ Izayoi Aki?): Aki is a girl with the "Super Ability", a power that can only be used through anguish and sadness. Because of this, she chooses to distance herself from people, believing her power to be caused by the Dragon birthmark she possesses. However, upon meeting Yūsei, she starts to change. She is the third Signer, who holds the Black Rose Dragon. Because of this, and her abilities, she is called the "Black Rose Witch".
  • Rua (龍亞 Rua?): Rua is the lively and blundering twin brother of Ruka. He plays a D-Former Deck.
  • Ruka (龍可 Ruka?): Ruka is the calm and collected twin sister of Rua. She has the ability to speak with Duel Monster Spirits.
  • Rex Godwin (レクス・ゴドウィン Rekusu Godowin?): Godwin is a chief of public maintenance for Neo Domino City. With his elitism, he transformed the city into a hierarchical society. He shows interest in the dragon-shaped birthmarks that both Yūsei and Jack have, and is the person who explains their significance to Jack. It is seen that he can be aggressive if necessary, but usually keeps a calm demeanor. [3]
  • Tetsu Ushio (牛尾 哲 Ushio Tetsu?): Ushio is a Security officer who observes the residents of Satellite. He has a violent character but holds high esteem as a duelist on his muscles. After losing to Yusei, he vows to defeat him, no matter how long it takes. He is the same Ushio who Yugi Muto challenged his first Shadow Game to.[3]
  • Mikage Sagiri (狭霧深影 Sagiri Mikaghe?): Jack's secretary. She is often very concerned over Jack and tries her best to be useful.
  • Nerve (ナーヴ Nābu?): Yusei's friend and inhabitant of Satellite. Has a strong sense of justice.
  • Blitz (ブリッツ Burittsu?): Yusei's friend and inhabitant of Satellite. Prone to worrying.
  • Taka (タカ Taka?): Yusei's friend and inhabitant of Satellite. Has a jolly personality.
  • Rally Dawson (ラリー・ドーソン Rari Dōson?): Appears to be a girl at first glance, but is a boy. Steals a chip to assist Yusei in his duel against Jack Atlas. Yusei helps him out when he is targeted by Security because of the marker on his cheek. Rally idolizes Yusei.
  • Mukuro Enjō (炎城 ムクロ Enjō Mukuro?): A challenger defeated by Jack in the first episode.
  • MC: The MC (master of ceremonies) for the Riding Duels.
  • Yanagi Tenzen: An eccentric old man and former traveler. He befriends Yusei after being detained in the Neo Domino City Detention Center. He plays a Hidden Treasure Deck, based on legendary treasures from all over the world, which he takes great pride in.
  • Jin Himuro: A former Riding Duel champion. At the detention center, he starts as a ruthless bully, but becomes an ally of Yusei. He plays an Ushi Oni Beatdown Deck.
  • Saiga: An old friend of Himuro.

[edit] D-Wheel

The latest Yu-Gi-Oh series features the "Riding Duels". An all new style of duel in which the players ride the D-Wheels, motorcycles with Duel equipment. Contrary to the previous series, dueling with D-Wheels contain some special rules. First, the duel is entirely played using the field magic "Speed World". Second, only magic cards designed to work into this field, known as Speed Spells, are allowed in the duel. Each magic needs a number of "Speed Counters" to be activated. Each duelist starts with zero Speed Counters and its number increase by one in each standby phase. A player's Speed Counters are reduced by one for every 1000 points of damage done to their LP. When a winner is decided, the D-Wheel of the defeated duelist shuts down automatically.

The D-Wheel features the card platform, sitting in front of the duelist, a stand for the cards in hand, which allows the duelist to ride with one hand while using the cards with the other, and a compartment for the deck located in the player's wrist. Cards sent to graveyard are inserted in a slot also located in front of the duelist.

In some D-Wheel models (called hybrid models), the card platform can be detached from the bike and function as a standard Duel Disk for old-fashioned duels. An example of a hybrid model is Yusei's red D-Wheel.

Several of the main characters in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's - known as "Signers" (シグナー Shigunā?) or "People of the Stars" (星の民 Hoshi no Tami?) - bear "Dragon Marks", a symbol on their body representing a part of the "Crimson Dragon". There are five Marks, the Dragon's head, tail, wings, and two claws. Currently, not much has been revealed about their meaning, however, the bearers of two of the Marks are known - Jack has carried the wings since birth, and the head appeared on Yusei's arm during the battle between Stardust Dragon and Red Dæmon's Dragon. Aki's Dragon Mark is the cause of her abilities.

According to Rex Godwin, the original People of the Stars, a pre-Incan civilization, summoned the Crimson Dragon using the Five Dragons. Afterwards, the Crimson Dragon imprisoned evil forces into the ground, forming what are now the Nazca Lines. Yusei, Jack, and Aki are descendants of the People of the Stars.

[edit] Addendum

"5D's" has been incorrectly quoted as standing for "5 Duel Scoop." V-Jump magazine printed a feature in their "Yu-Gi-Oh! Oukoku" (Yu-Gi-Oh! Kingdom) series which "5DS" (without the apostrophe) was labeled as "5 Duel Scoop," which referred to the information within the feature itself. (As further stated by the article "Getting the Scoop on 5 Major News Flashes on New Dueling Developments." And listing each item as "DS1"-"DS5.")[4] Merchandise, television commercials, the logo itself, and other references all state the name as "Faibu Diizu". ICv2 News also has the name "5 Duel Scoop" listed in its 4Kids article. [2].
