The Young Scientists Online Journal is a free online journal for students interested in the fields of science and technology^[1]. It caters for students from 10 to 20 years. The majority of its articles come from students of 16-18 years. The name is often abbreviated to Young Scientists. The Journal was set up in January 2006, and published its first issue in June of that year. The website was designed and created by students from The King's School Canterbury, Kent, UK^[2]. The original idea for the Journal came from Dr Ghazwan Butrous (now Professor), who came to Cristina Astin the head of Science at The King's School.

The Journal is entirely run and written for by students. Initially limited to King's pupils, it has now expanded to include students from across the United Kingdom. Articles on any scientific subject are accepted and can come in a verity of forms including; Quick Read, Feature Article, Reviews, News Nibbles.

The journal is non-commercial and is funded by the Butrous Foundation.

The website venture is supported by the Butrous Foundation which was set up in 2006 by Professor Ghazwan Butrous (University of Kent and Pfizer) to promote creative science communication among young people. His feedback on the website, echoed by several other eminent scientists, can be read on the Forum page: “This site is great. It is very beautiful, professional and par excellence; Young Scientists Online Journal will soon find itself among the top tier general science journals. Well done!” Young Scientists has also entered a partnership with the British Physics Olympiad to publish the results of their School Physics Competition.^{[3] [4]}

Introduced with Issue 3, Young Scientists TV provides science related videos and content. Some of the content comes from the Young Scientists Team, while the rest comes from sites like Youtube using embedded videos^[5].

[edit] Web Site Redesign

The Young Scientists site is currently undergoing a redesign which will allow users to submit their articles online and edit an improve them. It will also introduce a new simpler layout and improved functionally.^[6]

[edit] Content Types

• A Quick Read: This section of our journal has a few short articles for you to read if you only have a few minutes to spare.
• Feature Articles: These are longer articles, which pupils have taken time to research and write.
• News Nibbles: News Nibbles aims to collect a snap shot of news, from all aspects of science news. They are not articles in their own right but links to news by others such as New Scientist, BBC, 999 Today, Wired and Forbes. Where possible they will try to add more than one link so several viewpoints are available.
• What If...?: In the autumn term 2005 a science essay competition was launched at the King's School, Canterbury . The essays had to include in the title “What if…?” and had to address a science issue.
• Interviews: these are interviews with by prominent members of scientific community and science journalists. Recent interviews have included Steve Jones and Susan Greenfield.
• Cartoons: Comic cartoons with a Scientific theme by cartoonist JAC.
• Reviews: Reviews of recent books, films, websites and other media related to science.
