You Can Dance is the first remix album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on November 17, 1987 by Sire Records. The album contains remixes of tracks from her first three studio albums and a new track, "Spotlight," which gained moderate airplay in the US. The RIAA certified it' Gold & Platinum on Jan 20, 1988, denoting 1 million shipments in the United States and worldwide has sold at least 5 million copies.[1][2][3] A promotional version, You Can Dance - Single Edits of Album Remixes, was issued on the same day to dance clubs in the US featuring single edits of the album cuts.

[edit] Album history

The tracks on the album were segued together to resemble a DJ's set; this idea was revisited on the 2005 dance album Confessions on a Dance Floor. Although it was her only album to fail to reach the top ten in the United States it sold well (1,000,000 copies in the US), despite having no singles to promote it. Its success also inspired other artists such as Paula Abdul, Bobby Brown, Jody Watley, and Milli Vanilli to release remix albums.

In Japan, the album's one new song, "Spotlight," (left over from the True Blue recording sessions) was released as a single, and made the top ten. You Can Dance continued Madonna's string of platinum-selling albums.

[edit] Trivia

  • Originally it is thought that the album was to be released at the end of 1986 or early 1987, as the catalogue number is WX76 which is not in order with the previous album releases; True Blue (released June 12, 1986) — WX54, Who's That Girl (August 1, 1987) — WX102, You Can Dance (November 28, 1987) — WX76. Madonna also used the Shep Pettibone remix of "Into the Groove" during her 1987 Who's That Girl World Tour which began on June 14, 1987 — 5 months before the album release.
