Yangon Technological University or the Yangon Institute of Technology (YIT, Image:YTUTekkado.gif) is also known as RIT (Rangoon Institute of Technology). It was the first engineering university in Burma. Located in Gyogone, Insein, Yangon, it offers a B.E. Engineering degree, and Masters and Doctorate programs.

After the BEHL (Basic Education High Level) exam (equivalent to O levels in Britain), YTU offers an engineering degree after 6 years of study. At the third year, students are divided according to their interests. They offer 11 titles of degree for undergraduate, namely Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Petroleum Engineering, Textile, Aeronautical Engineering options and Architecture. Among them, Civil, Mechanical and Electronic engineering are on the highest demand by students. A food diploma is offered by Chemical Engineering.

After the 1996 and 1998 Uprising, the military government relocated many universities from the capital of Yangon to rural areas. Today, many cities have GTCs (Government Technology Colleges), formerly known as G.T.I.s (Government Technical Institutes), which offer 2-year engineering courses. Qualified students will enter engineering universities such as the Mandalay Technological University.

[edit] Campus and Reputation

Since its main campus re-established in the 1950s with cooperation of the Soviet Union, it normally had eight main buildings all colouring yellow. Building 1 holds the main hall and administraive depertments and joins with building 2 and building 3 consecutively. Building 5, 6, 7, 8 are in the lower blocks and holds school of Architecture and major laboratory rooms. Only one amazing thing is that the university has the system of linking all its buildings with rain-proof corridors of which no one university in Burma exists.

The campus is large enough to say as it facilitates carparks, gardens, sports-hall and football ground, opened-air canteen and restaurant. Lecturers' Halls and Residences are in the back side of the campus. The university had had 7 halls for students' accommodation namely Block A, B, C, D, E, F, G. G-hall is an exclusively female hostel. However, as the university was regulated in recent years, all of the accommodation blocks were refurbished and changed into class rooms. A new library was constructed near the main building 1.

[edit] Alumni

Many alumni and former faculty members are living and working overseas. Former YTU students organized a ceremony in Yangon, called Saya Puzaw Pwè (Ceremony of Paying Respect to Teachers), in December 2004 [1] and it was the largest ceremony ever organized and held by YTU alumni. The largest overseas group of alumni are believed to be living in Singapore [2] and the second largest in USA [3]. There is an engineering society [4] in Burma organized by the Burma Government.

Many YTU graduates migrate to Singapore and continue their study at Singapore Universities NUS and NTU.Some go to Thailand [Asian Institute of Technology].
