Matt Muprhy (born 13 February 1972 in Oxford, England) is a so called "professional" footballer who currently plays for Spalding.

[edit] Club career

Murphy started his promising career at Oxford United where he made numerous first team appearances, he was highly recognized for his pace and aerial ability. Murphy had a dubious spell at Oxford in his second year, he had a goal drought of 22 games before Oxford United decided to sell him.

In 2002 Matt Murphy was sold to Brackley. He was a delight for fans as he came from top tier football to play in the lower leagues for a little wage. Late in his terrific season he was cut down with a injury from Banbury United star Andy Baird who broke his leg in 6 different places. Matt Murphy was injured for the remainder of his contract and was a free agent for 5 years.

After 5 years of recovery Matt Murphy decided to play football once again, with a shock move to Banbury United. He was reunited with the man who injured him, Andy Baird. There was numerous reports of a locker room fight between the two but these were denied by the players and manager. Matt Murphy scored his debut goal against Birmingham City in a pre-season friendly. The fans were ecstatic and he was dubbed a Banbury great.

Matt left Banbury United late in the 2007-2008 season having a woeful lack of goals in 8 months. He was dubbed "podgy", "slow" and chants were made about him "running like a chicken".

[edit] International career

Matt was called up to the England squad in 1998 but it turned out to be a prank by his fellow Oxford United players.
