First mass celebrated at Fort Coligny in the island of Villegaignon. The French Huguenot admiral Nicholas Durand de Villegaignon, commander of the invasion of Rio de Janeiro in 1555 is shown at right. Painting in the National Museum, Brazil, 1890.
