Hi UPH - I've just undone a few page moves by you involving articles on various helicopters. The naming conventions that Wikipedia uses for articles on US military aircraft are that if an aircraft has an official name, we use the format designation - name for the article (eg. AH-64 Apache). If the aircraft either has no official name (eg. Lockheed U-2 - sorry can't think of a rotorcraft example!) or is ambiguous because there are more than one official name (Curtiss P-40 - again can't think of a rotorcraft) then (as you can see) we use 'manufacturer - designation.
Note that the above applies only to US military aircraft. In almost every other case, the convention is to use manufacturer - model number or manufacturer - name, whatever is more widely used for the particular aircraft being described.
You can find a full set of the aircraft naming conventions here. You might also like to check our WikiProject Aircraft, the effort to co-ordinate aircraft content across Wikipedia. Cheers! --Rlandmann 00:10, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Hi again. The names that you have used on the List of helicopters are almost perfect with regard to the naming conventions. Some need the manufacturer's name added: "Kolibri (Helicopter)" should be "Borgward Kolibri", "S-64" should be "Ericson Aircrane S-64" etc. Also, articles should not be named after a subvariant (unless we already have a long article on the general type), so "Do 32 E" should be "Dornier Do 32". I can see a few more redirects that we need, so I'll try to create those shortly.
- I was unaware of the discussion going on at the HH-60 page, otherwise I'd have explained the naming conventions there. --Rlandmann 30 June 2005 00:18 (UTC)
