My wife and I began unschooling our children in January of 1993; the oldest two are now in college, but our youngest continues to learn nothing intentionally. Though this might appear to constitute a rejection of formal education, I myself have worked in the education field, first in the public schools, and now in the private sector, since 1986. My experiences both as a parent and educator have helped me to realize that there is no one path that is best for everyone to follow in educating their children; unlike many other unschoolers, I am not a zealot.
My wife and I were both born and raised in the midwestern United States. While living in the Aleutians, we married, but exactly two years later we found ourselves in the southeastern United States, and have been unsuccessful thus far at escaping. And now that I am old and gray, I seem to have found myself reasonably adjusted to the heat.
I have been editing Wikipedia since sometime in the summer of 2005, having been introduced to it by my then-19-year-old son. I was highly skeptical of its value at first, and even resented the idea that my children and grandchildren would not flip through World Books, as I did back in the 60s and 70s. But in September of that same year I came to accept the fact that I was addicted. I assumed the username Unschool, as a reflection of my educational philosophy.
I enjoy the discussions that lead to the best, most NPOV articles possible. While I can sometimes become passionate in discussions, it is always in search of the truth, never in pursuit of an agenda. It is a small comfort to make the non-introduced acquaintance of persons with whom I so clearly disagree on fundamental viewpoints, and yet who so clearly can pursue such disagreements in such a civil manner. I offer my respect to all those who come to the project with open minds. See you on the talk pages.
