University of Sheffield student housing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

University of Sheffield student housing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, has several student residence halls. A few outdated residence halls were recently demolished, and Tapton Hall of Residence is scheduled to be demolished in 2009. Sorby Hall was imploded with high explosives on August 27, 2006. The university plans to concentrate its undergraduate students into the multiple buildings of the Endcliffe Student Village.[1]

Tapton Hall is scheduled for demolition before 2009 to make way for the new student village.[2]

It is the smallest of the catered halls, housing approximately 400 students (mostly first year undergraduates but also with a few higher years). It is also situated next door to the Music Department building and located less than a mile from the central campus of the university, close to Broomhill and Crookes and takes approximately 10/15 minutes to walk to the Student's Union. Tapton has its own bar, lounge and dining room (since it is a catered halls).

Ranmoor House was, until February 2008, a hall of residence at the University of Sheffield, UK. It was the largest hall of residence at the university, housing around 800 students, and also the most westerly, being furthest away from the Students' Union, the Octagon Centre and most of the university buildings, such as the Arts Tower and the Mappin Building.

All the residents of Ranmoor in the 2007-08 academic year were relocated to other accommodation, including the Endcliffe Student Village, during January and February 2008. Ranmoor is set to be demolished in Easter 2008, and the site redeveloped extensively with new accommodation blocks similar to those at Endcliffe. This follows the demolition of Earnshaw and Sorby to make way for the new accommodation at Endcliffe.

[edit] Endcliffe Student Village

The Endcliffe Student Village is a large development of student accommodation for the University of Sheffield[3], located in Endcliffe in west Sheffield between Fulwood Road, Endcliffe Vale Road and Westbourne Road. When complete the village will accommodate most of the University's first year undergraduates. The development includes both established blocks (Stephenson Hall, Crewe Flats, Halifax Hall) and new build blocks, typically 4-5 storeys high. Construction of these blocks began in 2006, after the demolition of Sorby Hall and Earnshaw Hall.

The development forms part of the University's Student Residences Strategy[4]. The first stage of this was the redevelopment of Crewe Flats and Stephenson Hall, and the construction of seven new blocks. Later plans includes the demolition and redevelopment of Ranmoor House and Tapton Hall of Residence.

At the centre of the Village is The Edge - this is a two-storey building intended as a hub for the site, containing the dining hall for catered students, as well as a bar, IT centre, and conference facilities. The redevelopment of the Ranmoor site will include a similar but smaller facility to be known as The Ridge[5].

Of the new apartment blocks, the two largest are known as Howden and Derwent. All of the apartment blocks are named after climbing crags in the Peak District

The entire redevelopment is expected to be complete by 2009[6].
