University of Glasgow Rectorial Election, 2004

The 2004 election for Rector of the University of Glasgow was delayed from February to December 15 when no nominations were received in time for the original date. With the incumbent Rector, Greg Hemphill having stood down, this left the university without a Rector in place for the first time in its history. With the rescheduled date four candidates came forward. They were Mordechai Vanunu, an Israeli citizen who had been jailed by Israel for leaking information of their nuclear weapons programme in the 1980s; John Beattie, a former student of the university and former Scottish international rugby player; Jenni Keenan Green, an actress; and Annas Alamudi, an Indonesian peace campaigner.

Vanunu, despite being unable to be present for the duration of the campaign and to undertake the duties of Rector due to restrictions on his travel placed on him by Israel, won the contest in what was a clear political statement from the students of the University, similar to when they elected Winnie Mandela to the post in the 1980s.
