University of Glasgow Rectorial Election, 1999

The 1999 election for Rector of the University of Glasgow was held to replace the departing Rector, Richard Wilson who had served his term. In all six candidates were nominated for the post. Ross Kemp was the nominee of the Glasgow University Labour Club, whilst Ian Hamilton QC was nominated by the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association. The comedian and actor John Sessions was nominated by the university Liberal Democrat society, but withdrew before his name appeared on the ballot. Other candidates were Will Pickering, who was backed by the University's Gaming Society; Margaret Smith, the grandmother of a student at the time who ran as "Jamie's Gran"; and Anthony Louden Connolly, who had been a stalwart of the Glasgow University Union debates scene for many years.

The campaign was illustrated by fierce competition between the Labour and Nationalist endorsed candidates, with Kemp winning fairly comfortably in the end. In a tighter contest for second place, Ian Hamilton managed to edge out "Jamie's Gran" on the third count.
