[edit] Campuses

The main campus will be in Ipswich, with regional centres (UCS Learning Network centres) located in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, Otley and Great Yarmouth.

Suffolk will soon have a thriving university campus with a hub in the county town of Ipswich, together with linked campuses across the county. In Ipswich this development will be in the Ipswich Education Quarter, located on and around the town's exciting and rapidly redeveloping Waterfront. There will be major new campuses at the other sites to meet the needs of further and higher education, the development of UCS is a regional initiative serving the whole of Suffolk and its borders.

UCS will also feature smaller, local innovative learning centres across the county offering advice, opportunities and progression routes to further study at university level. UCS will help to ensure that university, or "higher" education is accessible to as many people as possible.

The founding higher education institutions - University of East Anglia and University of Essex, with the partner colleges have come together to offer a unique collaboration of further and higher education. The universities, building on their established reputations in teaching and research are collaborating with the colleges to offer a professionally and vocationally relevant curriculum.21st century[8].

[edit] Ipswich Campus

Construction of the main campus on the Ipswich waterfront commenced in 2006 with the first facilities planned to be ready for use in September 2008. Further facilities will be built in phases over a period of 3-8 years [9]. The campus has been designed by RMJM Architects and is intended to be a landmark building and the focus for the Ipswich Education Quarter[10].

The Ipswich Campus is located on the waterfront in the Ipswich Education Quarter, situated a few minutes walk from the centre of the county town. Bars and restaurants, all located on the waterfront, give a trendy feel to this vibrant area. The iconic new building opens in September 2008. This means that students commencing their studies in 2009 will be the second cohort of students to enjoy the new facilities should they choose to study at the Ipswich Campus. Ipswich itself offers a superb range of facilities for all students, whether they like socialising in cafés, restaurants and bars with friends, walking through the medieval streets and country parks, or making the most of the multi-screen cinema and leisure complex.[11]

[edit] University Campus Suffolk at Suffolk New College

Suffolk New College is in the Ipswich Education Quarter, neighbouring the UCS Ipswich Campus, and hosts University Campus Suffolk at Suffolk New College.

Suffolk College is a vocational education institution that offers higher education courses on behalf of UCS. As of 2008, these are part-time Foundation and Bachelor of Science degree courses in the field of construction and the built environment. [12][13]

[edit] UCS Otley

The Otley Centre is located at the site of Otley College, situated just eight miles outside of Ipswich. In contrast to the urban environment of Ipswich, this area has some stunning villages and miles of rolling countryside.

Otley has a long history of delivering land-based industry courses and provides students with the opportunity to learn, train and socialise within a friendly environment. The Centre offers a range of exciting Foundation degrees for those students interested in studying for a higher education qualification with a specific vocational element. [14]

The Bury St Edmunds Centre is located at the site of West Suffolk College, an established centre for Higher Education with a ten year pedigree. UCS Bury St Edmunds offers a range of courses for the local community and beyond. The Centre has its own unique identity and offers a friendly atmosphere in which to study.

The Centre offers courses, from career-related Foundation degrees which combine work with study, to postgraduate qualifications.

Increasing access to higher education is of great importance to the Centre. The success of the Centres Access to Education courses, have opened up the possibility of degree level qualifications to many students who believed they could never achieve at university level. There are two Access awards – Access to Humanities and Access to Health and Social Care.

Recent and continuing investment ensures that the facilities are among the best in the region. UCS Bury St Edmunds is preparing for an increase in student numbers, with enrolments expected to double.

In September 2007 the new Arts and Science facility opened in Leonardo House. The next stage of a five year building plan will be a new Technology Centre.

In recent years, West Suffolk College has created a £1.5 million building for students in the Faculty of Humanities and Health and spent substantial amounts on refurbishments across a whole range of subject areas. There are plans to build a further 19,000 square metres over the next few years. The redevelopment will make better use of the large woodland area adjacent to the campus. UCS Bury St Edmunds’ students will benefit significantly from all of these developments.

Other changes are designed to improve car parking and traffic flow to the site, in conjunction with the Public Service village being created by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.[15]

[edit] UCS Lowestoft

The Lowestoft Centre is located at the site of Lowestoft College. The Centre provides higher education courses to serve the academic, vocational, employment and professional needs of the communities in the east of England. A strong emphasis is put on supporting students to ensure all can enjoy and make the most of their studies.
