- No, not for a long time. It integrated first, before the GUU, and Big Jim's GUU article says that was in 1980 (which I think is correct) - so QMU must have been sometime in the 60s or 70s. I think the informal appelations "The women's union" / "The men's union" lasted for longer. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 09:36, 12 May 2004 (UTC)
It was only a year, maybe a couple of years before the GUU allowed female members (or more accurately was forced to allow them to be members) that the QMU allowed male members. As a graduate of the uni of only a couple years standing Finlay I can tell you that a few folk still refer to the GUU as "The men's union". I think they hanker after 'better' days (quite why men don't want the presence of women around them is beyond me though). Big Jim Fae Scotland 13 May 2004

Both unions were mixed when I returned from my year abroad in September 1980. Students returning to GU in October 1980 were offered a choice between either Union - I chose the QMU for its proximity to the Modern Languages Department. [edit] Bower Building clarification
I corrected the following
In November 2001 the century-old Bower Building (home to the university's biology department and biological museum) was gutted by fire. Manuscripts by naturalist Charles Darwin, together with a large number of samples obtained on his expeditions, were destroyed.
as the fire was in October 2001, and the Bower housed the botany department rather than the biology department. I've also added a brief sentence mentioning that the Bower has since been re-opened. Hope this is all right! -- Doughnutraffler (19 November 2004)
I've further edited this - there is no "biological museum" as such in the University. Manuscripts and samples produced / collected by Darwin were not destroyed in the fire. Further, the Botany Department has not existed since 1994, when it became part of the Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences.
I've edited the information about Darwim slightly and readded it, it would seem that first edition texts of his works were destroyed, but news articles are more vague on whether manuscripts were destroyed or not. Reveilled 01:51, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

The firstcopy of qmunicate in its current format (ie, news-driven, rather than magazine style) was spring 2004. The name had been around for one or two years longer, but only a couple of publications were produced, both very different from its current fornightly format.

The statistics in the article are at odds with those in the infobox. Is it 17,000 students or c 20,000? How many staff/faculty? Tiles 09:05, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
I updated the figures for 2005, taking the numbers from the University's own facts-and-figures page. I also tracked down and added a pointer to the Sutton Trust report describing endowments, but is it really worth mentioning this? While it's true that Edinburgh and Glasgow are 3rd and 4th best-endowed in the UK, each is more than a factor of _ten_ down from Oxbridge, and even those are smallish in US terms. According to the report `Except for Oxford and Cambridge no British university has a significant endowment when judged by American standards', so that drawing attention to this ends up looking rather comical, I fear. [edit] Propose image change and deletion
I'm unhappy with the licence of Image:University of Glasgow.jpg. Although it has a copyright-anyuse tag on it, it's not clear that those are the actual terms. The general licence for the website (here) is non-commercial-only. On the actual source page the following terms appear "This photograph is available at a higher resolution for use in publications promoting the University here... The credit should read: 'University of Glasgow'.". It's not immediately clear to me which of these two statements applies to the image we use, and I don't believe either is sufficiently free for use in Wikipedia. The first (non-commercial) is a no-brainer; the second is too restrictive also - free images can be used on any article (say one on Glasgow, architecture, skylines etc.) and not just "publications promoting the University". At best this is equivalent to a fair-use image.
So, I propose to replace that image with this one (which I'll upload to commons as GFDL+cc-by-sa, probably after cropping off some of the vegitation and trying to fix the colours a bit) and mark the old one for deletion. I don't content the latter to be superior; clearly it's not, but it shows roughly the same content, and is properly licenced. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 15:10, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
I don't like the current photo either it is pretty poor quality and the colours look wierd. What about one with less stuff in the way like this or this or one from the library like this or even amore dramatic angle like this? A lot of the articles in Category:University of Glasgow are using "Glasgow University" in the article title even when the article itself uses "University of Glasgow" (e.g. Rector of Glasgow University).
I'm inclined to move almost everything to a "University of Glasgow" form in three days time except where individual moves are objected to or where it's clear that "Glasgow University" is the form used in the formal title/current branding of the article's subject.

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)
There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. [edit] Colours, and Trinity College
Unless I'm much mistaken, the colours shown as "Master of Theology (MTh)" are, in fact, for the School of Divinity (formerly Faculty of Divinity), which it inherited from Trinity College. The School also awards the BD and LTh degrees as well as the MTh.
