It seems to be a minor error; according to List of cities in Israel it has the status of a city. It isn't clear when this status was granted, but it was probably before 2004. Already changed. --Dhartung | Talk 22:26, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Can you please clarify the following sentence from your passage on UN Security Council Resolution 1559:"The only foreign forces existing in Lebanon are the Israeli forces which occupy the farms of Shebaa. Whereas the Syrian forces are friendly Arab forces which entered Lebanon according to the Lebanese government's demand."

It seems quite apparent that:

1) Hezbollah is not a friendly foreign force in Lebanon. Christian Lebanese and Sunni Lebanese do not appear to support their cause?

2) The presence of Syrian secret service? While troops have pulled out they are still in operation.

3) Yesterday Lebanon had asked the UN to intervene and move into the Southern region of Lebanon to bring stability and calm. They also stated that they want assistance in removing all foreign forces out of the region. This was a reference to Hezbollah.

With this in mind, how can it be stated that only friendly forces remain in Lebanon? Your clarification is greatly appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.22.228.144 (talk • contribs)

The text you are asking about is described as a quote from the website of the Lebanese army; as such it can be expected to provide their viewpoint. (The link does not seem to point to the same material at this time. That needs to be fixed.) If you have a problem with the viewpoint, you should probably complain to the government of Lebanon (although at the moment they seem to be busy). --Dhartung | Talk 02:01, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

1559 calls for:

• disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias,
• deployment of the Lebanese army along the border with Israel, and
• extension of the authority of the Lebanese government over all Lebanese territory

From UNSCR 1701: "Recalling all its previous resolutions on Lebanon, in particular resolutions 425 (1978), 426 (1978), 520 (1982), 1559 (2004), 1655 (2006), 1680 (2006) and 1697 (2006), as well as the statements of its president on the situation in Lebanon, in particular the statements of 18 June, 2000, of 19 October, 2004, of 4 May 2005, of 23 January 2006 and of 30 July 2006;"

I believe this means that all of these UNSC resolutions have been recalled. 1701 replaces them, and propogates only those portions of these resolutions that a specifically mentioned in the text of 1701.

Since it has been recalled, 1559 no longer carries the force of law. No parties are required to follow it aside from those parts specifically mentioned in 1701. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 63.255.1.135 (talk • contribs) .

No, it's just Security-Council-ese for "keeping in mind the history of this matter". Note that it also says "recalling .... the remarks of the President of Lebanon". Why would they be "recalling" those remarks if it means "nullify"? When the Security Council actually rules on amending a previous resolution, they use the verb "decides". --Dhartung | Talk 16:00, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Further, the official Israeli interpretation is that 1701 "Full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1559.". So you can see that one of the key parties to the resolution is convinced that it does not overturn any part of SCR1559.--Dhartung | Talk 16:13, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
