[edit] Origin and recording

The song features music co-written by drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Mike McCready and lyrics written by lead singer Eddie Vedder. At the end of the track, as the music fades and ends, Vedder can be faintly heard coughing.

[edit] Reception

In Pitchfork Media's review of Pearl Jam, the song was described as "a Springsteenian working-class portrait."[1] David Fricke of Rolling Stone said, "'Unemployable' is just half a story, with a soaring-melancholy chorus. The song ends before the guy with the pink slip can find a new job. But Vedder's opening scene -- the fist with the ring that says jesus saves, flying with helpless anger into a metal locker -- is lesson enough. In multinational capitalism run riot, the bottom line doesn't care about religion or party line. We're all expendable."[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

The song tells the story of a man who lost his job and his struggle to survive and provide for his family.

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's April 20, 2006 concert in London, England.[3] A live performance of "Unemployable" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
