Uhl Belk is a fictional character in Terry Brooks' novel The Druid of Shannara.

[edit] Biography

Uhl Belk is one of the two surviving Faerie creatures. He dwells in Eldwist, the stone city on the coast of the Eastland, which he guards using his Creeper watch-dog, the Rake. He is referred to as the Stone King, for he sought to turn the world to stone. He justified this by saying that he sought to preserve the world as stone, not change it, which was what he accused the King of the Silver River, his Faerie brother, of. Uhl Belk stole the Black Elfstone, a mighty lone Elfstone that killed enemies and stole their power. The power was then absorbed into the Elfstone's wielder.

Uhl Belk's child is the Maw Grint, which was once human in appearance, but mutated to a gigantic, blind, slug-like creature. This caused it to become far more powerful than its father, and the Stone King was only able to keep it at bay with the Black Elfstone. When Walker Boh, Morgan Leah, Pe Ell and Quickening entered Eldwist, tasked with recovering the Black Elfstone, they lured the Rake to its death at the jaws of the Maw Grint. Eventually, they defeated the Stone King and took the Black Elfstone. With the Elfstone no longer controlling it, the Maw Grint went insane and attacked its father. While escaping from the city, Pe Ell, secretly under Shadowen employ, killed Quickening with his magic knife, the Steihl. However, Quickening's death was part of her own plan to save Eldwist. As she died, flowers bloomed all over the city and the stone plains around it returned to life. As a parting gift to her lover, Morgan Leah, she restored the broken Sword of Leah to its former glory. The dome in which Uhl Belk dwelled was the only part of the city that remained stone, implying that he lived on.
