"Swapna" is both a name or a Hindu philosophy of dream and dreaming.
Some arguments have stated that it is a superb name but unusual female name of Indian origin. It usage as a name has declined over the years. However, it is still commonly found as a female name in southern India. In some cases, "Swapna" has been used as a substitute in online conversation for a person's real name. Using this uncommon alias (as opposed to John, or Jane) conveys a sense of cynicism and tomfoolery not shared by its more familiar alternatives.
Understanding the origins of the word help to further support the claim that the usage of 'Swapna' as a name is solely playful, rather than practical.
Swapna (in philosophy) In Hindu philosophy, a state of consciousness when a person (or being) is dreaming in sleep. At this state, he, she or it cannot perceive the external universe with the senses. It enjoys another universe that could have everything that the physical universe contains and more. This universe is created by the being by withdrawing from the physical universe and emanating in this self-created universe. This universe disappears on waking up to Jagra or slipping on to susupti. This universe is as real to the person who created it (i.e.,'dreamer'- the one who dreams) as the physical universe is real to the person awake. The dreamer can feel every sense that he can fell in the physical universe, with the same intensity. In terms of psychology, this is the sate of consciousness in REM sleep.
